What kind of document is it? (Fiction, diary, letter, philosophical argument, newspaper or magazine article, official memo, court ruling, politician’s speech) This is a philosophical argument social democracy Who wrote it? What kind of person wrote it? It by a working class man from Russia. He held political views of social democracy which could offer route to be taken by the Russia as a society during those times. He called for professional revolution driven through secrecy to avoid the Tsar’s regime police. The social democracy philosophy was meant to include all persons from diverse background. When was the document written? It was published in 1902 What was going on when it was written? In other words, what is the context of the document? There was increasing discontent against the government. Autocracy was widespread and the Russian society needed a way to respond to such circumstances which is what the document offered. Why was the written? It was written as a guide or response to many questions regarding how the society should respond to autocracy and uneasiness. For whom was it written? What was the document trying to achieve? It was written for whole of the Russian society tied with the autocratic regime. Then internal factors: What are the oppositions? And equations? The opposition are Tsar Regime which used police to crack down any opposition. The Tsar regime promoted autocracy unlike democracy. What kind of rhetoric/metaphors? -Professional revolutionaries is a metaphor for revolutionaries that were to assist in revolution. They were regarded as professionals since they were to be trained to combat police. -There is also bourgeoisie which represents the rich/employers/property woners who are upper class in the society What are the author’s assumptions? Especially unspoken assumptions? The author assumes that the secrecy will work and the Tsar regime will not find. The author further assumes that its possible to combine all the interest groups such as trade unions, self-education and bring them together for political education to become professional revolutionists. What do you think we might learn from this document from an historical perspective? From a historical perspective we might learn that concept of democracy started and was substantially a product of the working class/Industrial class. We can also learn that class struggle has been there for over century with division in social classes.
