Legalization of Drugs in the United States

To begin, Drugs have been one of the major cause of health issues in the United States as well as the center of all criminal activities. Over the years the United States governments through the security agencies such as the Drug Enforcement Agency and the state policies have been struggling with drug cartels over drug smuggling, drug distribution as well as the criminal activities that surround the drug trade. The debates on whether drugs should be legalized have been ongoing in major policy platforms in the United States (Vidal). The paper will shed light into the various reasons for the legalization of drugs, its benefits as well as issues that will come out of it. From Vidal Gore’s assessment of the drug situation, it can be deduced that the war on drugs has not been successful so far. The efforts of the government have been undeniable there have been thousands of arrests, and incarcerations of drug dealers and smugglers over the years. However, the rate of the drug is still an all-time high. Thesis: Drugs should not be legalized in the United States as it has devastating health side-effects on the bodies of the user some of which are fatal.

Vidal came to the conclusion that legalization of Marijuana will reduce drug addiction and other effects of drug use by legalization it, then making it available in the market at a price with warning signs. According to Vidal, the warning sign will contain facts about the effects of marijuana to the users and make them aware of the harm they are doing to their bodies as well as the effects the drug will have on them socially. Addiction has been depicted in the article as one of the worst effects of drugs including marijuana. Addiction comes from repeated use of the drug that makes the body dependent on it. Addiction comes with other severe side effects such as psychological issues, especially in cases where an addict fails to get a fix (Vidal).

Access to drugs is one of the issues that make the drugs even more demanding among youths. From a psychological perspective, the negative lights with which drugs are viewed by the public increase the curiosity of the youths to try it. In recent times, the availability of drugs to the public has been high despite the numerous incarcerations. Vidal Gore’s idea of marijuana legalization comes from his understanding of the American constitution. He stipulates that all the citizens have a constitutional right to make decisions on how to live their lives including what they take into their bodies as long as what they do doesn’t interfere with the rights of those around them. Vidal Gore used this perspective to propose the legalization of drugs citing that with access to both the drugs and the effects the drug has on the body of the users, the public will have free will to use the drugs or steer clear of it. Vidal believes that steering clear would be the most likely alternative for most people (Vidal).

Vidal Gore, however, stated that the disparities that exist between people will prevent the effectiveness of this strategy. He believes that with or without legalization there will always be drug addicts and alcoholics among any society. He, however, stipulated that given these choices, there will be a reduced number of drug users especially when people get to understand the devastating effects the drugs have on them (Vidal).

Despite these arguable facts brought put by Gore Vidal, the majority of people are against the legalization of drugs due to numerous reasons. First, the rate of addiction may increase due to the availability of drugs to the public. Addiction will further lead to a significant drop in the GNP of the country which subsequently affects the general economy of the state. Secondly, drugs are a big part of the erosion of morals in society. Most drug users and drug dealers are criminals or partake in crime either directly or indirectly. Other moral implications of drug legalization include irresponsible and antisocial behaviors (Vidal). Their reason against the legalization of drugs in America is the fact that drug business has led to further businesses such as the fight against drugs. There are numerous security agencies that fight drug use, most of whom will lack employment if the drug is legalized, including the DEA, antinarcotics as well as the homeland security agencies. All these agencies amount to hundreds of employees who might lose their jobs. Drugs should not be legalized in the United States at all costs as it has adverse effects on the users and those around them.

All things being considered legalization of drugs will increase drug use and addiction. As mentioned, there are numerous adverse health issues that arise from drug use especially marijuana. Some of which are, lung and heart conditions, impotence, infertility, memory loss, As well as brain damage. Other side effects include loss of appetite, antisocial behaviors such as crime, prostitution as well as laxity in responsibilities. Once the population gets hooked on drugs, the productivity of worker will reduce drastically, which will reduce the profits made in the organization as well as the competency of workers across the country. Lack of productivity will eventually lead to economic issues. The morals of the society have been constantly degrading over the years, part of these trend has been facilitated by drug use. Legalizing drugs will, therefore, increase the erosion of morals with vices such as prostitution, irresponsible sexual behaviors, and lack of productivity among youths as well as degradation of the standards of education.
