A. “Victimisation is completely random! It is nothing more than bad luck or being in the wrong place at the wrong time!!!!!” Consider the aforementioned statements. Are they true! What have your readings said about this. Can you think of any examples from where you live that would either prove or disprove these statements? Are there any groups of persons, residential or commercial areas that are particularly susceptible to repeat victimization where you are from? If so – why is this? Consider how effective remedies to repeat victimization could be introduced in terms of the ‘Crime Triangle’. In your deliberations thinking about ‘Boost’ and ‘Flag’ explanations could be helpful.

B. What are the objectives of Design Against Crime (DAC)? Apart from those examples in your readings can you think of any everyday DAC examples from where you live? Do you have any DAC ideas of your own that you could help your community? You might like to think of everyday community and public space examples, or you might like to think of social justice issues. As you can see from your readings some of the best DAC measures are the simplest (e.g. the law of simplicity ‘Occam’s law or principle of parsimony is often cited for simplicity in solving problems)

A. Operation ‘Cul de Sac’ a situational crime prevention (SCP) strategy in

Los Angeles (U.S.A) reduced homicides/murders. How did it achieve

this? Which of the 25 principles of SCP can you identify that the strategy

included? What does it mean when it was said the strategy reduced

homicide/murders but did not reduce the motivation of offenders? How

can this be so? Does this mean ‘Cul de Sac’ was a failure if it is not

addressing the motivational/psychological reasons for offending?

B. Can you think of any SCP methods in the community where you live?
