• A stair is a series of treads

and risers, the two making a

step, in a flight of stairs,

usually enclosed in a

structure or cage (Staircase),

providing access from one

storey or floor to another.

Terms related to stair

-Tread: The top of the step

- Guardrail: Support mounted at the side of the

open face of the stairway.

- Midrail: Rail located between top edge of

stairrail system and top of the steps.

- Balusters: Vertical members of the stairrail

systems.

- Risers: A rise in elevation. A step.

- Point of Contact: Point where hand or foot

meets the stair or railing. 3

Uses of stairs in construction

- Stairs are commonly used in construction
