Servant Leader
The Heart of Leader
Above all else guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Proverbs 4:23
“As scripture confirms, the beliefs in your heart set in motion your why” (Blanchard, Hodges & Hendry, 2016, p. 41).
EGO is a matter of the heart.

The Head of a Leader
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect will (Romans 12:2. ESV).”
Vision – knowing where you are heading to.
Mission – knowing how you are going to get there.
Values – knowing the reasons for what and where you are going.
Then we looked at the Head of a Leader.
Not leading from the natural tendencies of lording over people or using position or titles to force people to follow but but looking to serve others by staying true to the vision the group is working towards.

The Hands of a Servant Leader
The Hands are the way of a Servant Leader
“Through His hands – His effectiveness as a Servant Leader – Jesus was able to communicate to His disciples what was in His heart and His head about Servant Leadership (Blanchard, Hodges & Hendry 2016, p. 167).”

Today we move on to the Hands of a servant Leader
9
The Hands of a Servant Leader
With his hands Jesus:
reassured the doubting.
restored the fallen.
beckoned the already occupied to a higher calling and a special personal relationship with him.
The Hands of a Servant Leader
Jesus’ hands at work.
Healed the sick
Made the blind to see
Fed hungry people
Overturned the tables of the money changers
Washed the feet of his disciples
Hung from a cross to save sinful human beings.
11
The Hands of a Great Servant Leader
As varied as the work of Jesus’ hands was, it was always motivated by the same purpose:
To fulfill the VISION & MISSION He was given.
Display God to mankind.
To help them recognize their sin and their need for a savior.
To offer Himself as a sacrifice to save mankind from slavery to sin.
12
How can we lead like Jesus?
By learning from the way he leads
The Work & The Way of the Carpenter
“Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas (Matthew 13:55, ESV)?”
From the Book Leading Like Jesus.
These are key points and be sure that they could be on the next Class Quiz.
NOTHING that happens in our lives is random and coincidental.
It all happens for a purpose.
Jesus was a carpenters son in order for God to use the training he learned from helping his dad to be the leader he later became.
15
The Work & The Way of the Carpenter
Similarities between the work of a good carpenter and the work of a good leader.
This Week’s reading is about 8 ways Jesus used what He learned by working as a carpenter to be a great servant leader.
Make sure you read Chapters 21 – 30 in Lead Like Jesus (Blanchard, Hendry, & Hodges, 2016).

3 Steps to Servant Leader Performance Coach
Performance planning.
Day to day coaching.
Performance review.
These are the three basic and yet profound ways in which a true servant leader can help followers become their best.
18
Servant Leader Performance Coach
Jesus said; “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men (Matthew 4:19, ESV).”
He had a plan!
Jesus is the best performance coach there ever was or will be.
He showed us how to love others more than ourselves and how to hold followers to the task of living up to Gods best for them.
19
Performance planning.
Day to day coaching.
Performance review.
THE PLAN:
Jesus said; “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men”
THE COACHING:
Jesus lived with His disciples for 3+ years giving them day to day instructions.
THE TEST:
Peter walks on water.
James and John ask to sit at either side of Jesus in His Kingdom.
Jesus shows by the way He led His disciples that He was a great performance coach.

Servant leader as a Performance Coach
Performance planning: providing direction and setting goals.
Day-to-day coaching: focuses on the servant aspect of servant leadership. That involves helping people win—accomplish their goals– by observing their performance, praising their progress and redirecting their efforts when necessary.
Performance evaluation: leaders sit down with people and evaluate their performance over time.
How does this become practical?
How can I as your leader show you how a servant leader coaches?
21
Servant Leaders:
Lead like Jesus by
PERFORMANCE COACHING
Understand how people learn.
4 stages of learning
Novice: someone just starting out.
Apprentice: someone in training.
Journeyman: someone capable of working independently.
Master: someone highly skilled and able to teach others.
We as leaders have to take heart and realize those who we lead will at various times disappoint us or let us down.
This is difficult but if we truly want to be servant leaders we need to accept that people are at different stages in their learning.
23
Novice
What are the needs of a novice?
Need basic information on what to do and how to do it, when to do it, where to do it.
Need a leader who welcomes them.
Apprentice
What are the needs of an apprentice?
They have not mastered all the information and skills they need in order to work independently.
Need a coach to set goals, provide learning opportunities
Make sure they don’t become overwhelmed.
Journeyman
What are the needs of a Journeyman?
A journeyman may periodically become cautious, lose confidence, or have a diminished sense of enthusiasm for their job.
If ignored, the journeyman quietly drift into apathy or retreat from taking risks due to a sense of lost competence.
26
Master/ Teacher
What are the needs of a Master/teacher?
Need to be given the opportunity and challenge to pass on what they know to the next generation of learners– and they need your blessings.
Each level requires a different level of leadership or coaching
27
| Learning Stages | Leaders Provide |
| Novice- someone just starting out | Instruction: basic information; what how where, when, why |
| Apprentice- Someone in training | Development: Instruction, practice and evaluation |
| Journeyman- Someone able to work on his or her own | Mentoring: Assignment and encouragement |
| Master- Someone able to teach others | Commissioning: Affirmation and autonomy |

Obeying God
Do what Jesus did and put an apron on authority.
Jesus in John 13:1-3 showed ultimate servant leadership by doing what no leader in his day would have done.
He washed the feet of His disciples.
He showed humility, love and service all in one act of kindness.

Do what Jesus says and live His New Commandment.
Jesus said; “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” (John 13:34, ESV)
+
Obeying God & Expressing His Love
“As a leader, you always have the choice of responding in a loving way– and that option is not usually the easiest way.”
(Blanchard, Hodges & Hendry, 2016, p. 211)
EGO needs to be Exalting God Only = Love, Grace, Forgiveness, Encouragement, Community
EGO cannot be Edging God Out = Hate, fear, pride, self, aloneness
38
Expressing His Love
As a leader, you always have the choice of responding in a loving way– and that option is not usually the easiest way.
Sometimes love will require you to let go of your pride and fear and do the hard thing of holding a staff member accountable.
(Blanchard, Hodges & Hendry, 2016, p. 211)
EGO needs to be Exalting God Only = Love, Grace, Forgiveness, Encouragement, Community
EGO cannot be Edging God Out = Hate, fear, pride, self, aloneness
39
Responding in Love… WHAT Love?
“Love never gives up. Love cares more for others than for self. Love doesn’t want what it doesn’t have. Love doesn’t strut, Doesn’t have a swelled head,
Doesn’t force itself on others, Isn’t always “me first,” Doesn’t fly off the handle, Doesn’t keep score of the sins of others, Doesn’t revel when others grovel,
Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth, Puts up with anything, Trusts God always, Always looks for the best, Never looks back, But keeps going to the end.”
1 Corinthians 13. The Message Bible

#2 Grace
The Habit of Grace
Grace is getting something that you don’t deserve.
Often as leaders, we need to give grace to the people we work with.
People will disappoint us as leaders.
They are not perfect like we as leaders are not perfect.
Grace is believing that people are doing the best they can, given their level of awareness.
Grace is love in action after people make mistakes.
It is up to a Servant Leader to make sure grace is extended, to lead in the way of grace.
What is grace?
Grace is giving someone acceptance and forgiveness when it is not deserved or earned.
Grace is not looking the other way or pretending a wrong was not committed but rather facing the wrong and choosing to move forward together.
Is it the act of living out being kind to others?
Random Acts of Kindness - video
Or is Grace being kind to others even when you know they don’t deserve your kindness?
It is often easier to be kind and compassionate to people we don’t know rather than being kind to those who we know have done terrible things and do not deserve kindness.
We as humans have a desire for justice. We feel that those who have done terrible things deserve punishment.
Grace & Servant Leadership
Receiving Grace; getting something you don’t deserve.
Ephesians 2:8-9 “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” (ESV)
Giving Grace;
Since God has so richly given grace, His followers being obedient to Him must be generous in give grace to other.
Asking questions instead of accusing of wrong.
Giving someone the benefit of doubt when we are hurt.
Being willing to forgive not once but many times.

This week’s reading will go into what grace is in more detail.

#3
Forgiveness
The Habit of Forgiveness
“Humanly speaking, forgiveness is impossible.”
“Forgiveness does not mean that you deny what happened.”
As a leader, you need a “healthy capacity to forgive, redirect and move on.”
It’s a “supernatural act of a person who has surrendered self, plans, will and live in obedience to God.”
Jesus taught forgiveness to his disciples.
(Blanchard, et.al. ,2016, pp. 221- 224 )
The Habit of Forgiveness
Is there someone in your life, who has hurt you or caused pain that you need to forgive?
The Habit of Forgiveness
Is there someone in your life, who has hurt you or caused pain that you need to forgive?
If you don’t forgive, you are carrying around extra weight/luggage and this will affect your personal life as well as organizational /business life.

Corrie ten Boom 1892 – 1983
During the German blitzkrieg across Europe in May 1940, tanks and soldiers invaded the Netherlands. Corrie, who was 48 at the time, was determined to help her people, so she turned their home into a safe haven for people trying to escape the Nazis.
Dutch resistance members carried grandfather clocks into the watch shop. Hidden inside the long clock cases were bricks and mortar, which they used to build a false wall and hidden room in Corrie’s bedroom. Although it was only about two feet deep by eight feet long, this hiding place could hold six or seven people: Jews or members of the Dutch underground. The ten Booms installed a warning buzzer to signal their guests to hide, whenever the Gestapo (secret police) were searching the neighborhood.
The hideout worked well for nearly four years because people were constantly coming and going through the busy watch repair shop. But on February 28, 1944, an informant betrayed the operation to the Gestapo. Thirty people, including several of the ten Boom family, were arrested. However, the Nazis failed to find the six people hiding in the secret room. They were rescued two days later by the Dutch resistance movement.
Prison Meant Death
Corrie’s father Casper, then aged 84, was taken to Scheveningen Prison. He died ten days later. Corrie’s brother Willem, a Dutch Reformed minister, was released thanks to a sympathetic judge. Sister Nollie was also released.
Over the next ten months, Corrie and her sister Betsie were shuttled from Scheveningen to Vugt concentration camp in the Netherlands, finally ending in Ravensbruck concentration camp near Berlin, the largest camp for women in German-controlled territories. The prisoners were used for forced labor in farm projects and armament factories. Thousands of women were executed there.
Living conditions were brutal, with meager rations and harsh discipline. Even so, Betsie and Corrie conducted secret prayer services in their barracks, using a smuggled Dutch Bible. The women voiced prayers and hymns in whispers to avoid the attention of the guards.
On December 16, 1944, Betsie died at Ravensbruck of starvation and lack of medical care. Corrie later recounted the following lines as Betsie's last words:
"… (we) must tell them what we have learned here. We must tell them that there is no pit so deep that He is not deeper still. They will listen to us, Corrie, because we have been here.”
Two weeks after Betsie's death, ten Boom was released from the camp due to claims of a "clerical error." Ten Boom often called this occurrence a miracle. Shortly after ten Boom's release, all of the other women in her age group at Ravensbruck were executed.

Encouragement
The Habit of Encouragement
Definition: the action of giving someone support, confidence or hope.
“Encouragement completes the coaching cycle: it is your opportunity to help those you coach stay on course and not move backward. A key aspect of effective encouragement is catching people doing something right”
(Blanchard, et.al. ,2016, p. 227)

Community
The Habit of Community
Jesus modeled living in Community with his disciples.
He established the mission and vision of the community and He gave His disciples a vision of the future.
A loving community sets boundaries and communicates about what is acceptable within its culture and what is not.
Communities keep people accountable.
All the Doing Habits happen best in community.
A community is a family, a team, a group, or friends hanging out.
As in the Being Habits having relationships with people allows us to help one another become the people we were meant to become.
“As Iron Sharpens Iron, so one person sharpens another” Proverbs 27: 17, ESV)

The Five Love Languages
The original book that was written in 1995, by Gary Chapman
It outlines 5 ways to express and experience love which are called “love languages”
As emotional beings, we need to receive love that fills our tank in specific ways. However, other people express and experience love in different ways.
This can be applied to any relationship: friends, parents, children, and romantic as well as the workplace.
