Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Unit 4: The Head of a
Great Leader
EGO Factors Into Leader-Follower Relationships
But What happens when leaders and followers clash?
A servant-hearted leader + a servant hearted follower = results and relationship.
“The ideal relationship between leader and follower is characterized by mutual service and trust.
Creativity and learning can occur, blind spots can be uncovered and potential misunderstandings can be avoided.”
(Blanchard, Hodges & Hendry, p.201)

The three pillars of CONFLICT
1. When its about the dishes, its not about the dishes = What is the conflict really about?
2. We can get stuck - the seduction of justification. Am I trapped in believing I am blameless?
3. The art of speaking responsibly - like learning a new language. The solution requires:
Vulnerability, Ownership, Communication, Acceptance, Boundaries.

WHAT STYLE OF GREATNESS DO YOU WANT?
IF YOU WERE ABLE TO PLAN FOR YOURSELF A PATHWAY TO GREATNESS.
WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE?
17
The heart and the head of leadership tells the world;
where you are going.
How you will get there.
what will guide you.
Before we look into what each of these are all about.
We need to establish which style of leadership we will follow.
????
Our Natural way of leading.
Or
Jesus’ way of leading.
There are Two Natural Ways to Lead
Lord it Over Them
Subject your followers to your power.
Market share, financial clout, bigger army, or business.
Leaders subjugate their followers.
They don’t not like to deal with questions, dissention or critics.
Lord implies master/slave relationship.
They like to play god!
Exercise Authority
People are forced to follow them because of their position, not because of who they are as leaders.
They rely on titles, or a hierarchy of being a high official to exercise power over people.
Jesus offers a new way to lead.
Jesus Teaches a Better way to lead.
35 James and John, Zebedee’s sons, came up to him. “Teacher, we have something we want you to do for us.”
36 “What is it? I’ll see what I can do.”
37 “Arrange it,” they said, “so that we will be awarded the highest places of honor in your glory—one of us at your right, the other at your left.”
Two disciples ask Jesus for a favor.
They are wanting to have a place of authority in the new kingdom Jesus is establishing.
Sitting on either side of a leader meant you have position and power.
22
Jesus Teaches a Better way to lead.
35 James and John, Zebedee’s sons, came up to him. “Teacher, we have something we want you to do for us.”
36 “What is it? I’ll see what I can do.”
37 “Arrange it,” they said, “so that we will be awarded the highest places of honor in your glory—one of us at your right, the other at your left.”
38 Jesus said, “You have no idea what you’re asking. Are you capable of drinking the cup I drink, of being baptized in the baptism I’m about to be plunged into?”
39-40 “Sure,” they said. “Why not?”
Jesus said, “Come to think of it, you will drink the cup I drink, and be baptized in my baptism. But as to awarding places of honor, that’s not my business. There are other arrangements for that.”
They thought they were ready for the job but were not at that time, Jesus knew they eventually would.
They both gave their lives for the sake of the message of the Gospel of Jesus in a future day.
23
41-45 When the other ten heard of this conversation, they lost their tempers with James and John. Jesus got them together to settle things down. “You’ve observed how godless rulers throw their weight around,” he said, “and when people get a little power how quickly it goes to their heads. It’s not going to be that way with you. Whoever wants to be great must become a servant. Whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave. That is what the Son of Man has done: He came to serve, not to be served—and then to give away his life in exchange for many who are held hostage.” (Mark 10: 35 – 45, The Message)
The other disciples were furious with the two brothers.
Mostly because they had asked before they did and because they did not want them to lord over them.
Jesus changes the paradigm and puts value in serving not power!
24
Jesus’ Servant Leadership is an alternative way to lead.
Is Not;
Self serving servant-hood to enhance the opportunity for personal advancement or promotion.
A way of manipulating followers to do what you want them to do.
It Is;
A call from self-interest to serving others.
Move toward being a Steward of what has been given and honor trust by achieving greatness through serving others.
Jesus’ way is not being a weak Leader
Link to video in in the picture.
26
Jesus is a powerful Leader in many different ways.
Jesus cleared the temple of unfair, greedy, and abusive behaviors. Mark (10:35-45, ESV)
Jesus taught with authority to the amazement of those listening. (John 4:32, ESV)
Even though He gave His life up to die on the cross on His own initiative, He had the power to take it up again. (John 10:18, ESV)
He healed sick people, raised Lazarus from the dead, made the blind to see, the deaf to hear, the lame to walk, fed 5,000 men with 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish, and challenged the status quo.
His greatest accomplishment of saving us from our sin, will never be equaled. (1 Peter 2:24, ESV)
Jesus does all that and more while choosing to serve.
28
WHAT STYLE OF GREATNESS DO YOU WANT?
Let me ask you again.
IF YOU WERE ABLE TO PLAN FOR YOURSELF A PATHWAY TO GREATNESS.
WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE?
29
The heart and the head of leadership tells the world;
where you are going.
How you will get there.
what will guide you.
In becoming a great Servant Leader, we need to answer three critical questions:
31
1. What is the VISION I have for my life? Not what will I do, but what will I be remembered for.
Will you leave this world a better place for being here?
32
1. What is the VISION I have for my life? Not what will I do, but what will I be remembered for.
Will you leave this world a better place for being here?
33
2. What is my MISSION in life? What is it that I meant to do while I am here on this earth?
How will I make my impact?
In what way will I leave this world a better place?
What will I be busy with?
34
2. What is my MISSION in life?
What is it that I meant to do while I am here on this earth?
How will I achieve the Vision I have for my life?
How will I make my impact?
In what way will I leave this world a better place?
What will I be busy with?
35
3. What are my VALUES? What are the key building blocks of what’s important to me that helps me make decisions to achieve my vision and fulfill my mission?
3. What are my VALUES? What are the key building blocks of what’s important to me that helps me make decisions to achieve my vision and fulfill my mission?
What is important to you?
What values do you hold in your heart to be most important?
Do you know what those values are?
Do you use them to make decisions on the future of your life?
37
In answering these 3 Critical questions you too can become a great servant leader!
1. What is the VISION I have for my life? Not what will I do, but what will I be remembered for.
2. What is my purpose or MISSION in life? What is it that I meant to do while I am here on this earth to achieve my Vision?

Leadership is about going somewhere.
69
Leadership is about going somewhere. Effective leadership begins with a clear vision.
People need to be inspired with a VISION that speaks to the essence of what need to be done by them.
70
Proverbs 29:18
Where there is no prophetic vision the people cast off restraint, but blessed is he who keeps the law.
People loose their way when there is nothing or no one to keep to the vision.
That is why there is such a huge need in the world today for good servant leaders.
Servant Leaders with a Mission to achieve a Vision using Values important to them and their followers.
73
We all start somewhere and we have each other to help us get to where we need to go
Either we have a Vision for others to follow us or we have caught the vision of someone else and serve that vision.
74
TEAMS
ONCE THE VISION, MISSION AND VALUES HAVE BEEN STATED THE WORK OF BUILDING & DEVELOPING CAN BEGIN.
Why team?
Harvard Business says this about a team…
“a small number of people with complementary skills who are committed to a common purpose, performance goals and approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable”
(Wilkes, p. 215)
A team is a group of people bound together by a commitment to a shared VISION, MISSION, & VALUES.
Jesus had a team
Why did Jesus have
disciples?
JESUS came to begin a new way of living for all mankind.
“Mission continues when people are captured by it, equipped to do it and “teamed” to carry it on.
(Wilkes, p. 213)
Note: Before Jesus began His earthly Mission, He took time to focus Himself clearly on what the Vision and Mission.
Matthew 4: 1-11.
This takes place right after Jesus was baptized symbolizing the beginning of His earthly mission.
At the end of His 40 days of fasting and prayer, Jesus was tempted 3 times to turn away and go against what He was He knew He had to do proving He was beyond the reach of the evil one who tempted Eve in the garden of Eden.
Jesus did what we find most difficult to do, resist the temptation selfishness (Matthew 4:4), the temptation of putting something else in the place of God (Matthew 4:12), and not give in to the lure of power and prestige .
77
All the aspects of Servant Leadership can be expressed in teams
Wilkes (1998) says “leadership of a team is the highest expression of servant leadership,( pp 217-218).”
Leaders are truly leading when they are serving the team by enabling each team member to do their part to achieve the Vision by staying true to the Mission and Values.
78
Building a team: 4 steps
(T) Create a sense of Togetherness.
(E) Empower with authority and presence.
(A) Account for the mission and the team’s actions.
(M) Be a mentor.
T – create a sense of togetherness
Every team member has a place on the team.
Knowing each others strengths and weaknesses – everyone can think and act differently. Diversity is a strength to be managed not a weakness. (personality profiles help).
Teams form to reach a common goal together related to the overall mission of the organization.
Teams must have a purpose and reason for coming together.
Togetherness prevents the leader from working alone and keeps the EGO in check.
E– empower with authority and presence
Empowerment is giving power to those with the knowledge and knowledge to those with the power.
Jesus gave his disciples the authority of his name and the power of his presence to carry out their mission.
Spending time with people builds trust. Trust builds authority in ourselves and in those around us to carry out what we need to accomplish.
Empowerment is giving people the opportunities and resources to do a task.
Before the 1940 and the 2nd World War, women in America/Canada were not welcome in the factories and production plants.
When most of the able bodied men went off to war there was shortage of workers to build the planes. Tanks, guns & bullets for the soldiers.
Factories opened positions for women, and they rallied to the cause.
Showing not only could they do the job men normally did but did as well or better.
This changed the landscape of the workforce in the western world.
83
A– account for the mission and the team’s actions
Empowerment and accountability go hand in hand. No group ever becomes a team until it holds itself accountable as a team.
Accountability gives you a sense of how well you are achieving your goals individually and collectively.
It requires a servant heart, humility and a willingness to serve one another, serve the mission and stay focused.
Teams that avoid accountability
Create resentment among team members who have a high standard of performance.
Resentment; “a feeling of anger because you have been forced to accept something that you do not like.” (https://dictionary.cambridge.org)
Teams that avoid accountability
Create resentment among team members who have a high standard of performance.
Encourage mediocrity.
Teams that avoid accountability
Create resentment among team members who have a high standard of performance.
Encourage mediocrity.
Miss deadlines and deliverables.
Teams that avoid accountability
Create resentment among team members who have a high standard of performance.
Encourage mediocrity.
Miss deadlines and deliverables.
Place burden on leader to be sole source of discipline.
Teams that hold one another accountable;
Ensure that poor performers feel pressure to improve.
Identifies potential problems quickly by questioning one another’s approaches without hesitation.
Establishes respect among team members who are all held to the same high standards.
Speak openly and honestly to each other for the good of the team.
M– be a mentor
A mentor is a guide, someone who shows up along the way on one’s journey.
Leadership calls for more mature and experienced to show others the way.
Jesus mentored his disciples for three years. He taught through stories, eating meals together, journeys, teaching, always looking for ways to show them how to lead well.
Leaders need mentors too –don’t neglect your own growth and development!
Mentoring can happen in different forms.
No one person is able to do everything as a mentor.
People and Teams will need many mentors.
91
“The delicate balance of mentoring someone is not creating them in your own image, but giving them the opportunity to create themselves.”

How do servant leaders serve their group?
We as servant leaders EQUIP THOSE WHO WE LEAD IN TEAMS
E – ENCOURAGE THEM TO SERVE
Q - QUALIFY THEM TO SERVE
U - UNDERSTAND THEIR NEEDS
I – INSTRUCT THEM
P – PRAY FOR THEM
(Wilkes,1998, pp.189-204)
ENCOURAGE – ONE OF THE DOING HABITS
QUALIFY – ALLOW THEM TIME AND TRAINING TO BE READY TO DO THE WORK ‘BACK SWING’
UNDERSTAND THEIR NEEDS – BY LISTENING WELL AND OBSERVING HOW THEY ARE DOING. TRAITS OF A SERVANT LEADER – LOVE LANGUAGE
INSTRUCT THEM – ALWAYS BE READY TO REMIND FOLLOWERS WHERE THEY ARE GOING AND WHAT IS EXPECTED – VISION & MISSION
PRAY FOR THEM – THIS ALL IS ONLY POSSIBLE WITH GOD’S HELP. A SERVANT LEADER KNOWS WHO TO CALL ON FOR HELP - GOD

108
Pray for them
You have been entrusted with a responsibility as a leader with the success of the team.
This is an enormous load and it is through praying we acknowledge our need as leaders for strength, wisdom and discernment to make the best choices.
Praying keeps us in the right mindset as servant leaders to follow Jesus and His ways.
Praying for your team shows where your heart is in respect to who is in control of everything.
