Personal and Professional Development

In this module, as you already know, you are required to take responsibility for your own personal development. Many professions (including HR, nursing, accounting, professional engineers, chartered managers etc...) require continious personal and professional development, keeping records of it throughout the career.

You are therefore starting out on what could be an ongoing journey of development and reflection

Professional Development

Extract from a CIPD podcast...

Rebecca : For me personally CPD is about having the most relevant knowledge, having the most up to date information and being able to apply that in a way that’s useful, both for me personally and for the job that I'm doing within the organisation. So I think that it isn’t just about me, it’s about what it also gives back at the same time.

So – CPD is for the benefit of the individual and also for the organisation.

PDP Template

The best objectives are written down and shared

In this module and assessment, you will be using templates based on those used by professionals to write down your objectives and to record your progress against them

9

9

Your PDP Template

What do I want/need to develop and why? What will I do to achieve this? What resources or support will I need? What will my success criteria be?(How will I know when I have achieved my learning objective?) Target dates for review and completion

10

Explain how this template enables the student to create a SMART objective, if they complete all the columns fully and in detail

10

Good objectives

Specific

I will improve my soft skill.

I will improve my academic writing.

Measurable/ motivational

I will learn Microsoft Excel.

I will learn Microsoft Excel with in December and prepare a spreadsheet for my expenses.

Achievable/ attainable/ agreed

I will make myself ready for the head of department job with in this semester.

Realistic/ resourced

Time-bound with milestones

11

What do I want/need to learn and why? What will I do to achieve this? What resources or support will I need? What will my success criteria be?(How will I know when I have achieved my learning objective?) Target dates for review and completion
To enhance my problem solving and decision making ability so I can be more decisive in my job role and assertive       To be more decisive in life and forward with my problems, when a problem arises try to find a solution immediately and don’t let it drag out in a calm and patient fashion. For example, in my job role as a marketer an issue could be due to a lack of detail/information from a business makes it difficult to help it expand as unsure of what it wants. To resolve this rather than panic, use initiative and do background research/contact the business to sort the problem quickly     Books/articles to help find the best solutions to my problem etc.   When a problem arises and I find myself looking for solutions immediately and not just use the first solution that comes available but look at a range firstly.     May 2018 (end of semester)
To improve my communication skills so I can exchange and share my ideas correctly and confidently in team work I may have to undertake         To put my ideas forward more and not be afraid of rejection or being wrong as is the only way in order to progress. For example in my job we have to put together campaigns, advertisement videos for businesses and so I will always put my thoughts forward no wonder how good or bad they seem as could potentially lead to further ideas etc.   Verbal Feedback from colleagues/workers to say if I am improving in communicating my ideas etc.   When group work comes about and I find myself putting my ideas out there without hesitation or worry.   May 2018 (end of semester)

Record the outcomes

Keeping records of what you have done.

Most importantly your records will help you to focus on what you have got out of your development activity.

Record the chosen method of development, the date(s) when development was undertaken, the outcomes, and any further action needed.

It’s a MARKETING document…

19

Employers want to know 3 things…

Make a good impression

First impressions are usually lasting impressions. It may not be fair but in a busy and competitive world, we don’t often give each other second chances’.

(Barbara Polan, Journalist)

On average, how long will an employer look at a CV for?

Some reports say 30 seconds…

Recent research suggested 8.8 seconds!

CAN YOU DO THIS JOB - Competence What are your skills and experience

DO YOU WANT TO DO THIS JOB - Motivation

Are you enthusiastic? Why do you want the job - with that health trust- in that department? What is your knowledge of the NHS?

Fit will you fit in with the team and the organisation as a whole? -Personal qualities and values

For example…..

ST As Treasurer of a student society, I needed to create a new members’ database

A I decided to use to create an Excel spreadsheet for two reasons. In the sort term is enabled me to keep track of and then chase outstanding subscription payments. It would also be easy to pass on to the next Treasurer and would be a useful tool for comparing membership trends.

R Purely as a result of this tracking, membership income rose by 10%.

This example is good because it gives a clear outcome & achievement – it’s not just mentioning what your responsibilities were.
