Moses had These Attributes:
He was Born an Israeli slave in Egypt, 1525 BC.
He was condemned to die as a child but saved out of pity and raised in Pharaoh's court as a son of Pharaoh's daughter.
At 40 years old he murdered an Egyptian and ran for his life into Midian. Lived as a shepherd for 40 years.
He married a ‘Midian’(Not Israeli) girl and had kids.
He had a speech defect; stutter, lisp, ???
He wanted nothing to do with leadership or power.
EXODUS Chapters 1 - 4

Moses helped free the Hebrew people from slavery in Egypt, the most powerful nation in the world at that time.
He led this huge mass of unruly refugees through the desert, kept order, and brought them to the border of their future home in Canaan. (Close to 40 years)
The accomplishments of Moses;

Moses received the Ten Commandments from God and delivered them to the people.
Under divine inspiration, he authored the first five books of the Bible, or the Pentateuch: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.
Moses obeyed God's orders despite personal danger and overwhelming odds. God worked tremendous miracles through him.
The accomplishments of Moses;

Moses’ upbringing in Pharaoh's court would have taught him to;
Pay homage to many gods.
Never show humility or weakness.
Power and wealth was most important.
“Self” was the only important thing that mattered.
Why talk about Moses so much?
Moses was not what PEOPLE would normally THINK of as a Leader
of God’s people.

There is only One God
To lead well a leader must know how to follow.
Love and what is in your heart is most important.
God and loving others is the only thing that truly mattered.
Jesus said; “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. (Matthew 22: 37 – 40, ESV).”
By obeying and following God, Moses learned that;

God teaches people like Moses that;
Leading is a matter of the HEART!!!!

The HEART is so important to
leadership because;
Love is stored in our heart.
We forgive from our heart.
Store truth in our heart.
The heart hold our desires.
The heart holds onto determination.

Greenleaf says to be be a Servant Leader you need to have the heart desire to serve-first.
To lead like Jesus, the greatest Servant Leader requires a change of HEART.
Leading as a servant leader begins with the heart

WHAT’S YOUR LEADERSHIP EGO?
“EGO IS DEFINED AS THE CONSCIOUS PART OF A PERSON’S PSYCHE, THE PART THAT CONTROLS THOUGHT AND BEHAVIOR AND INTERPRETS EXTERNAL REALITIES.” –SIGMUND FREUD
In other words;
Your EGO is a reflection of
Your HEART

Two types of EGO
Are you Edging God Out ?
Or
Exalting God Only?

HOW DO WE EDGE GOD OUT?
When we put something else in His place as the object of our focus or worship.
Power, recognition, appreciation, money ,,,,
When we depend on other sources for our security, safety, our future happiness and sufficiency.
Intellect, position, contact with influential people.
When we put others in His place as our major model for self-worth.
Our performance + other’s opinion = self-worth

Edging God Out Who do I worship? Who is my source of security and self-worth? Who is my audience and judge?
PRIDE
An overly high opinion of yourself, exaggerated esteem of self, haughtiness, arrogance.
Romans 12:3
PROMOTING SELF
-boasting
-taking all of the credit
Showing off
Doing all the talking
Demanding all the attention
FEAR
An insecure view of the future producing self-protection.
Proverbs 29:25
PROTECTING SELF
-hiding behind position
-withholding information
-Intimidating others
-Hoarding control
-discouraging honest feedback
-Always separates man from God, other people, and himself or herself
-always compares with others and is never happy
-always distorts the truth into false security or fear

WARNING SIGNS
#1- The “I” Factor…Is it all about you? Is the job or group work all about what you can do? Example: In a conversation a person only talks about him/herself.
#2- The Mine Perspective…You do not trust other people. You are very controlling and you think “I would rather do it myself.” or “I would do a better job.” For example you are hoarding information, refusing to empower co-workers to make decisions, and failing to delegate.
#3 Negative Response to Feedback…“Yes but . . .”You can’t take feedback. You only want to take feedback from certain people.

--Truth instead of distortion as a basis for decision-making

HOW TO START EXALTING GOD ONLY
Seek to lead for a higher purpose—beyond success, beyond significance—to obedience and surrendered sacrifice.
Assess my level of trust and surrender to what I believe about God, His kingdom and His claim on my life and leadership.
Seek, cultivate and embrace humility.

Remain stuck in the way I am and how I deal with and treat others.
Go against God’s way and go my own way.

It is a conscious choice that God has given to mankind from the day He created man.

#2 Experiencing Solitude
#1 Accepting and Abiding in God’s Love
Solitude; the state of being alone but not being lonely.
Jesus role modeled taking time for personal reflection.
Matthew 4: 1-11 – He spent 40 days and nights in the wilderness alone at the beginning of His mission.
Luke 6:12 -13 – He spent the entire night praying before choosing His followers.
Matthew 14:13 – He went to be alone when He heard of the death of John the Baptist, His cousin.
Matthew 14:23 – After He miraculously fed the 5,000+ people, Jesus went into the surrounding hills to be alone.

Prayer is an important habit that shows our sincerity in Exalting God Only!
Jesus modeled prayer even in the darkest hours of His life on earth.
In Matthew 26: 36 – 39 we read of a critical time in the last hours of Jesus’ life.

SELF-SERVING OR SERVANT LEADER: WHICH ARE YOU?
Servant leaders, consider their position as being on loan and as an act of service, look beyond their own season of leadership and prepare the next generation of leaders.
A servant leader never asks anyone to do something they wouldn’t be willing to do themselves.
How can you be a servant leader?
Daily surrender your motives and actions to Jesus as your guide and role model for how you should lead.

Servant Leaders Move away from a Head-Table Mentality
Jesus teaches His Followers to wait.
Head-Table Mentality
When someone invites you to a wedding feast do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited. If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you “Give this man your seat.” Then humiliated, you will have to take the least important place.
But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, “Friend move up to a better place.” Then you will be honored in the presence of all your fellow guests.
For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.

Jesus and his followers are invited to the home of a religious leader for a meal.
People push and shove their way to sit at the head table with the important people and get the best food.
Jesus says this is not how it should be done but to wait for God to exalt them.
We all have desires to be be important and influential but on our own we fall short of what we really want, which is recognition and respect.
Jesus offers a new way, wait for God to provide you the opportunities and be ready when they come.
Prepare yourself, learn, study, and wait for the openings.
“but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;

Priority in a culture of achievement.
Respected, Popular or Being Important.
Being the One at the Top.
Authority / Power.
Control.
Honor - the person at the head table are the ones being honored.

These are particularly true at weddings.
