“Anytime you seek to influence the thinking, behavior, or development of people in their personal or professional lives, you are taking on the role of a leader” (Blanchard, Hodges & Hendry, 2016, p. 24).”
Leadership is a process
of influence.
The greatest influence you have as a leader is to yourself.
LEADING SELF - Matthew 4: 19-20 “Come and follow me”, Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed Him.
You cannot change how someone else thinks or behaves but you can change your own paradigms of thinking.
ANOTHER – Matt. 14: 31-30 – Peter sinks into the waves and calls out to Jesus for help. Peter trusts Jesus to walk on water and to save him when he fails.
OTHERS – John 13: 13-14 – Jesus gives His followers a huge lesson in servanthood and empowers them to do the same.
You can only influence, not change others, or an organization. As a leader build trust through vulnerability and openness, people will respond by becoming a community where change is safe and possible.
ORGANIZATIONS – Matt. 28:18-20 – the Great Commission.
A leader decides to change how a company operates and the change is always in the best interest of the people in the organization.
4
Leading Self.
“Your Identity is linked closely who or what is your ultimate authority and audience (Blanchard, Hodges & Hendry, 2016, p.27).”
The first step to leading self is to decide who you will follow and to whom you will listen.
5
“’Come and follow me’, Jesus said, ‘and I will send you out to fish for people.’ At once they left their nets and followed Him (Matthew 4: 19-20, NIV).”
Leading Self begins with knowing who or what you are following.
Jesus calls you and me to follow Him to be more than what we could ever imagine for ourselves.
The men Jesus called to be his followers in Matthew chapter 4 were fishermen, tax-collectors, just ordinary men and women.
All he asked of them is to love and follow him, to trust him.
6
SELF = perspective
SELF:
Whose am I? (who do I belong to)
If I follow Jesus then I belong to God and in turn God will ultimately lead and direct my life.
If not Jesus, then who is the ultimate authority in your life?
Who am I?
My identity
My life purpose
Where do I find these things? Where does my identity come from?
”For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them (Ephesians 2:10, ESV).”
Pause & Reflect
Whose are you? (Who are you following?)
Who are you?
How would you describe your identity?
Your life purpose?
Where does the direction for these things come from?
You are unique!
One of a kind!
The only one like
You!
Leading Another. Is only truly possible if trust has been established in a leader – follower relationship.
Matt. 14: 31-30 – Peter sinks
into the waves and calls out
to Jesus for help. Peter trusts Jesus to walk on
water and then to save him when
he sank into the water (Blanchard, Hodges & Hendry, 2016).
The greatest influence you have as a leader is to yourself.
LEADING
SELF - Matthew 4: 19-20 “Come and follow me”, Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed Him.
9
LEADING ANOTHER = Trust
Trust is built when we are committed to serve and support one another. And trust grows when we engage in trust-worthy behaviors (keeping promises, following through, being available, encouraging each other).
”But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt? (Matthew 14:30-31, ESV).”
Love is the key to build trust,
maintain trust,
and repair trust.
Tell the story of Mount Royal course on business leadership 1980’s
The one thing all leaders need to understand that if they do not have legitimate love for those who follow them they will never lead well because they will not trust a leader who does not openly show they are loved..
There will always be mistrust and doubt on the part of those who follow.
10
Pause & Reflect;
Who are leaders you trust?
What are some character qualities we look for in leaders we trust?
Are they always trustworthy?
What happens when a leader fails to be trustworthy?
Can that trust be regained?
Tim working for Gordon in the bakery
Gordon treats another employee poorly and and disgraces the other employee and himself.
Tim stopped working for Gordon because he didn’t trust Gordon to treat him well.
11
Leading Others.
“Effective leaders realize they are to be good stewards of the energy and efforts of those they lead; they honor diversity and acknowledge the power of teamwork (Blanchard, Hodges & Hendry, 2016, p.29).”
Leading Others.
In John 13:13-14 Jesus gives His followers a huge lesson in Servant-hood and empowers them to do the same.
The greatest influence you have as a leader is to yourself.
LEADING
SELF - Matthew 4: 19-20 “Come and follow me”, Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed Him.

ANOTHER – Matt. 14: 31-30 – Peter sinks into the waves and calls out to Jesus for help. Peter trusts Jesus to walk on water and to save him when he fails.
OTHERS – John 13: 13-14 – Washing the feet of His disciples. Jesus gives His followers a huge lesson in servanthood and empowers them to do the same.
You can only influence, not change others, or an organization. As a leader build trust through vulnerability and openness, people will respond by becoming a community where change is safe and possible.

14
LEADING OTHERS = community
Jesus created a community by empowering his followers to serve and then trusting them to do that.
Servant leaders harness the abilities of everyone to carry on the mission.
Honoring diversity.
Honoring teamwork.
”You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet (John 13:13-14, ESV).”
Jesus showed He trusted them to carry out the mission by leaving the disciples after His death and resurrection.
15
Pause & Reflect
How do you think the people you lead at home, work or school would describe your leadership in the following situations:
In a time of crisis?
In a time of failure?
In a time of success?
Leading an Organization. ”Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age (Matt. 28:18-20, NIV).”
When a Servant Leader decides to change how a company operates; the change is always in the best interest of the people within the organization.
The greatest influence you have as a leader is to yourself.

17
Servant LED ORGANIZATIONS = Service culture
By valuing both relationships and results, Jesus created a culture for an effective organization, the church, to be birthed and carry out his mission of love and hope.
Followers of Jesus and the church have for over 2000 years been influencing culture around the globe.
Servant led organizations cultivate unique cultures that foster trust, creativity, work-life balance and harmony.
”And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:18-19, ESV).”

“Servant leadership begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. . . The differences manifests itself in the care taken by the servant– first to make sure that other people’s high priority needs are being served.
The best test is this: do those served grow as persons; do they, while being served become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants?
And, what is that effect on the least privileged in society; they benefit or at least will they not be further deprived.”
(Robert Greenleaf, 1970)

PHILIPPIANS 2: 1-10 TALKS ABOUT THE HUMILITY OF JESUS…
So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, 2 complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. 3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.
Jesus was in heaven as a part of the God Head (Trinity –Father, Son & Holy Spirit) but left his place of position and power to become a baby.
61
4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.

62
8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
