Body paragraphs
Paragraph Order:
Assertion – Explanation– Evidence 1 – Discussion 1 – Evidence 2 – Discussion 2 – Connection.
Explain how the Bible passages (Evidence) connect with your BIG IMPRESSION.
Analyze and explain the meaning of the biblical text in Discussion 1&2.
The evidence should ONLY come from the main biblical text (e.g. John 13)
General Body Paragraph Pattern
Assertion: Mention your key words (Thesis & Paragraph)
Explanation: Describe WHAT YOU MEAN by your paragraph key words
Evidence: 1) INTRODUCE your evidence 2) provide a DIRECT QUOTE of the evidence, and 3) end with a CITATION of the Bible

What kind of ‘scenes’ do we have in this story?
Why does the author focus on these particular scenes?
The story mentions that the meal is already in progress, but…
“…he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him” (John 13:4 – 5 NIV)
* Instead of lounging and relaxing during dinnertime, Jesus chooses to get up and engage in physical labour
A Sentence-by-Sentence Analysis: Assertion Sentence
Assertion: Include the THESIS KEY WORD (=Big Impression) and the PARAGRAPH KEY WORD (=character or event)
E.g. The humility of Jesus is revealed through His washing of the disciples’ feet
Humility of Jesus = THESIS KEY WORD (or Big Impression)
The washing of the disciples’ feet = PARAGRAPH KEY WORD
Explanation Sentence
“What do you mean” by the paragraph key word?
E.g. Describe what you mean by “the washing of the disciples’ feet”
– More specifically, though he is their teacher, jesus carries out the duty of a servant by offering to wash his disciples’ feet
Use appropriate transition phrase: “In more detail” or “More specifically”
Evidence Sentence
First, introduce the book/author/context by beginning the sentence:
e.g. In the Gospel of John, Jesus is having a meal with his disciples. At the end of the meal, he decides that he wants to demonstrate his love for them…
Quote the passage from the Bible with a proper citation:
…so he “got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist” (John 13:4 NIV).
Discussion Sentence
Sentence #1: What did we just read?
Describe the scene as mentioned in the quote and explain why the quote is significant.
Use specific words from the quote as needed.
Begin with a transition word/phrase, such as “With this in mind” or “Clearly”
E.g. With this in mind, in “taking off his outer clothing” and “wrapping a towel around his waist”, Jesus prepares himself to do what a servant would have done for the guests of his master.
Sentence #2: Why is this quote relevant?
Connect the dots – connect the idea presented in the quote with the big impression
E.g. In volunteering to do what a servant needs to do, Jesus demonstrates humility….
Second Evidence Sentence
Using the same format as the first evidence sentence, introduce the second quote
Make sure the quote is also related to the BIG IMPRESSION & THE PARAGRAPH KEY WORD (e.g. “Humility” and “The washing of the disciples’ feet”
Continuing to describe Jesus’ actions, John further notes, “After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him” (John 13:5 NIV).
Second Discussion Sentence
The same rule applies: 1) Describe the quote 2) Connect the dots and explain why the quote is relevant to the big impression
1) Clearly, Jesus pouring the water and using the towel he has wrapped around his waist to dry their feet indicate that he has thoroughly prepared himself to wash his disciples’ feet. 2) The fact that he does not allow other servants to help him carry out all of the tasks associated with the washing of their feet reveals his absolute humility; even as their master, he desires to demonstrate to them that he has come to serve them.
Connection Sentence
Complete your paragraph by indicating your big impression and the paragraph key word
Therefore, John 13 reveals Jesus’ humility through Jesus’ washing of his disciples’ feet.
