Lumber

• Lumber is wood that has been processed into beams and planks

• Lumber size categories:

– Boards 1 to 1.5 in thick, 2 in and wider

– Dimension lumber 2 to 4 in thick, 2 in and wider

– Timbers 5 in and thicker, 5 in and wider

• Note: thickness is the smaller cross sectional dimension and width is the larger dimension

• Rough (2" x 4") vs dressed (1.5" x 3.5") lumber

• In quantity takeoff use the rough or nominal dimensions (2 x 4)

4

Take off unit • Unit: feet-board measure, mfbm or just BF (note

the type of species and grade of lumber)

• One board foot is equal to the volume of a piece of

wood 1 inch thick and 1 foot square.

– For Example:

the board feet of 20 pcs of 2x8 lumber 14’ long is = 20 x 2

x 8 x 14 /12 = 373 fbm/BF

• Wall Framing

9

Floor framing

• Review specs and dwgs for grade of lumber, size of girder, size and spacing of joists, no. and size of openings, no. and type of bridging, and type and thickness of subflooring

• # of joists= (bldg length/joist spacing)+1

• # of 4’x8’ subflooring plate = area of floor /32 (neglect openings less than 32 sf)
