Learning the Art of Delayed Gratification
In the current world where people live, there is a bombardment of many chances and opportunities for instant gratification. The advancement in technology has made people's lives more comfortable to the extent that they feel entitled for every good thing in this world as far as life is concerned. Today, it seems to individuals that with merely a simple button press, one can instantly get what he or she requires. Since the contemporary world is geared towards the getting way, it clearly shows the reasons as to why today's world suffers the greatest patience poverty.
As taught from the story of Joseph by the narrator to the audience, being patient is always part of being faithful. Joseph was seen to be aware of this from the tale, and he was therefore very patient with what God had promised him. He could very well recall the dream he had in which God revealed to him that he would have to rise to power (Daniel, 2017). He, however, did not know when this would come to pass, he only believed and trusted in the word of God and knew that it was to happen any time in his life as had been promised by the almighty God. He knew that God is not a human being to lie and that God can deliver every one of his promises to his faithful people. In this portion of the story, it is clear that the narrator has brought out the fact that Joseph has learned the virtue of patience and the art of delayed gratification. He denies himself of the immediate and temporary pleasures which are given by sin with the aim of enjoying a greater joy as well as pure blessedness in God's presence.
Joseph could have in the most natural way possible succumbed to the temptation which came to him in the form of the seduction by his master's wife and gets him to enjoy the pleasures of sin. However, he could not do this great wickedness and sin against his God who he truly
trusts and in whom he believed. He instead left his garment in Potiphar's wife's hands and ran away from the temptation (Daniel, 2017). Joseph is brought out in this story with the motive of making Christians know and notice how determined he was. From the tale, Joseph did not just walk away from his master's wife's seduction but fled and ran out swiftly. The story is therefore included in this chapter of the Bible to assure Christians of the great hatred type which they should have against sinful acts which are contrary to the will of God.
From joseph's tale, Joseph hated sin to the extent that he did not want to come near to it. Satan often presents sin to the Christians as something fundamental and desirable so that they are lured towards it just like it occurred in the situation of Joseph in the story (Daniel, 2017). However, Christians are presented with this story in the bible to help them emphasize the fact that they should not be deceived however many temptations they have to face in believing and trusting in God for his promises to them. Sin shall forever remain to be a sin, and people shall never have the opportunity to escape its ugly, deadly and deceitful consequences. God had established a spiritual regulation in place that he who sins must suffer the impacts of sin however harsh they are.
The story of Joseph was also narrated with the aim of reminding the believers that sin is capable of bringing fleeting physical pleasures. However, they are required to understand and always remember that the pleasures will never last. It is because sooner or later the sinner will have to meet the wrath of their sinful deeds. On the other hand, being obedient to god often brings life in today's life regardless of time and in the life to come just like it happened to Joseph in this tale (Daniel, 2017). The contemporary readers, Christians, and believers, in general, are therefore urged by the narrator through this great story of Joseph to make a sage decision and choice. They are to decide between enjoying life for a moment as the other sons of Jacob did or
suffering now from having an eternal enjoyment and rejoicing in the Lord like in the case of this faithful servant, Joseph.
The story of Joseph offers the readers with an idea of how God operates in the impressive scheme of activities. God is aware of every individual's life's detail. He is our father and acts like the earthly father in the sense that he will withhold no good things from him who is righteous and walks uprightly. The objectives and motive of this story in the bible are compelling. The contemporary readers of the story as well as the Christians, in general, have to put in mind that these objectives will, however, go for waste if they fail to put into daily practice what it conveys. At the end of joseph's story, he is seen to say that now his brothers should not be angry or grieved with each other and with themselves because they sold him to Egypt since God had sent him before his brothers who would later come to Egypt to preserve life. He emphasizes to them that it was not them who sent him to Egypt but God. Joseph tends to understand that every occurrence in his life was by the will of God. The story is therefore meant to encourage contemporary readers also to have faith that God has a plan in their lives, and he is presently working closely with them. God is not done yet, and therefore it is the responsibility of the readers and believers of today, just like Joseph to be patient and allow God to direct their lives.
