Learning Objectives and Assessments EXPLANATION

There are many important components of a lesson plan. A lesson is driven by the learning objective. This outlines what the teacher wants his/her students to accomplish within that specific lesson. It should be measurable/observable and match the assessment/evaluation. This assignment will provide you with practice writing effective learning objectives and matching them with appropriate formative or summative assessments. (Click on links for further information.)

Examples:

Virginia SOL- 3rd Grade Math

3.3 a) name and write fractions (including mixed numbers) represented by a model

Verb- Identify

Level of Rigor- Comprehension

Objective: The student will identify and name fraction models with 4 out of 5 correct.

Assessment: Worksheet containing 5 fraction models where students identify the name of the fraction.

Steps:

1. Alignment. What are the standards your students are required to learn?

(Focus on the state standards. Link to Virginia SOL’s.)

2. Cognitive Level. Based on the specific standard you are focusing your lesson on, what is the level of rigor you are going to evaluate students on? (Look at Bloom’s Taxonomy levels . The verb in your objective will be based on this level.)

3. Learning Objective. Write your objective using an appropriate verb to match the intended level of rigor, your objective should include the expected student performance and criterion.

4. Assessment. How will you know if your students met the learning objective? (Your assessment can be formative or summative, but should give you a clear understanding of individual student mastery levels of the objective. This should match the criterion described in your objective.)
