Sustaining Personal Change: The Big Idea two types of developmental challenges
Technical: Skill sets to address the challenge are already known
Add new skills and competencies to those already in place
Adaptive: Requires a shift in mindset to address the challenge
Must “let go” of certain values, beliefs, loyalties, habits, and identity to be successful *
Note: Most complex challenges have both technical and adaptive elements but we tend to emphasize the technical and ignore the adaptive aspects
Technical vs. Adaptive: What’s the difference?
| Whose Challenge? | Technical Aspect | Adaptive Aspect |
| Surgeon | Learn to remove a different organ | Be part of “team” medicine |
| Pilot | Learn to fly larger plane | Learn to fly helicopter |
| Parent children | 1 child to 2 | 0 children to 1 child |
| Patient | Take blood pressure medicine | Change lifestyle to reduce stress |
Sustaining Personal Change: Process & Worksheet

| What you most want to improve (an adaptive vs. technical challenge): | What you are doing/not doing that gets in the way of getting what you want: | What you also value…? (that sustains Column 2 behavior): | What you believe (or fear) will happen if you shifted Column 2 behavior: | How might you challenge your big assumptions? |
