Leadership Success Always Starts With Vision

Leadership success always starts with vision. John F. Kennedy famously dreamed of putting a

man on the moon. Eleanor Roosevelt envisioned a world of equal opportunity for women and

minorities. Nelson Mandela's vision during the apartheid era was for the eradication of racism

and for the establishment of a constitutional democracy. Mahatma Gandhi's main vision was to

help India gain independence from Great Britain and establish home rule. Compelling visions

can truly change the world. But staying invested in them can be extremely difficult when hard

times arrive.

Why makes great leaders so effective? It usually comes down to a few fundamentals. Vision is

always one of them. Great leaders give real thought to the values, ideas and activities they are

most passionate about–and those are the things they pursue, rather than money or prestige or

options forced on them by someone else. The visions these leaders have can be- and, in fact,

should be –challenging to put into action. They realize them only by setting realistic, demanding

goals and then going after them relentlessly, with the help of other talented men and women

who are equally committed and engaged.

Indeed, when it comes to living out a vision, persistence matters just as much as inspiration.

Leadership vision is an essential means for focusing attention on what matters most; what you

want to accomplish in your life and what kind of leader you wish to be. A useful vision has to be

rooted in your past, address the future, and deal with today's realities. It represents who you

are and what you stand for.

Having a strong leadership vision is essential. It is important to know where you are heading

and why you are heading there. Balance, structure and motivation are essential elements to an

empowered leader. You need to know your values and have a clearly defined vision, both on

the personal level and on the professional level. These two have to be in alignment with each

other.

Personal Vision

Having a well-defined personal vision is highly important for leaders. Your personal vision needs

to be in alignment with your personal values. What is truly important to you? Why are these

your priorities? Are you working hard now in order to have more free time later? Do you need

more balance in your life so that you can function better?

It is important to stop and take a close look in the mirror on regular basis. Are you on the right

path? Is something missing? Are you clear on our why and where you are going? Do you need

to redefine any of the aspects in your vision? Is your personal vision based entirely on what you

want to accomplish or is it also based on how you intend to enjoy life?

Professional Vision

A powerful professional vision is essential to any leader. Your professional vision needs to be in

alignment with the values of the company you are running. Whether it is a company you own or

run as an employee. Updating your professional vision on regular basis and staying in alignment

with it every day, is also very important. Whether you are a business leader or an entrepreneur

- having a strong vision is going to take you from where you are now to where you see yourself

going. A good tip on developing and staying in alignment with your professional vision, is to

start thinking from the place your vision is going to take you to.

Strong Leadership Vision

A strong leadership vision is composed by a well-defined personal vision and a powerful

professional vision. These two are extremely potent pillars for success. But not only that - they

are also pillars for personal fulfilment, balance and professional development.

When you are leading a group of people, your vision has to be clear. Your team has to know

that you are authentic and that your vision is in alignment with both your personal values and

the values of the company you run. Growing a company based on a strong vision can be quite

fun. That is actually an element that should be included both in the personal vision and in the

What is a vision statement?

A vision statement is a paragraph that encapsulates everything you would like to be, do, and have

in your career. It defines what success and excellence look like to you. It expresses your vision for

want to operate. A vision statement:

• describes what you want to achieve in the future.

• answers the question “Where do I want to be?”

• defines the optimal desired future state—the mental picture—of what you want to

achieve over time, say in five, ten or more years.

• inspires you to give your best and shapes your understanding of why you are doing what

you do.

• reflects your life purpose, goals, and intentions

Example: “My vision is a world where everyone is contributing with their full potential; where

each person uses their intrinsic genius and leadership to deliver outstanding value-added

projects.”

Example: “My vision is to be an honest, empathetic and impactful project leader and to be

recognized internationally within my industry. I am committed to growing as a leader and

delivering value-added projects to the end users.”

Personal Leadership Vision – A Compelling Image of an Achievable Future.

Leadership vision is an essential means for focusing attention on what matters most; what you

1. A compelling story of the future is engaging; it captures the heart, forces you to pay attention. Those who hear it want to be a part of it somehow. And they are moved.

2. What does your future look like – what’s the image? If others could travel into the future with you, what would they find? A well-crafted leadership vision is described in

concrete terms that are easy to visualize and remember.

3. The story of your future should be a stretch, but it must be achievable, too. If it were not achievable, you would have little motivation to even bother trying.

4. Finally, future simply means out there – some time from this moment forward, but not so far away that’s it is out of reach.
