Hersey-Blanchard Situational Leadership Model
This type of leadership mainly concentrates on contingency thinking.
The theory holds that leadership is situational.
Therefore, the best leadership style is dependent on the situation and the people being led.
A good leader should be guided by the objectives and goals which are to be accomplished.
The level of education and experience of a leader determines their level of success.
SLM draws a majority of its views from contingency thinking. As the name suggests, the appropriate leadership style should be dependent upon the situation. Since there are different situations, no single leadership skill can be considered as the best. A leader should be guided by the goals and objectives at hand and adapt to ensure that they are achieved.

Vroom-Yetton Normative Decision Model
The leaders that utilize this model employ the available information to make decisions.
The required information is gathered from the group members. However, the leader has the option to choose whether or not the decision is informed by the group member.
The information is collected at an individual level as the group members are not allowed to meet.
This model is mostly applied by design managers and art directors. They are supposed to make critical decisions which have an effect on the design process and also the entire production process. This decision model enables the reduction of risk to the minimal level by choosing to make the decision either on their own or with the assistance of experts. There are different models which are employed to help in this decision making process.

Differences between SLM and normative decision model
| Normative decision model | SLM |
| Leader makes the decision alone | Decision is made by the leaders and the group members |
| Decision may not be influenced by the team members | Decision is highly influenced by the members of the group |
| Behavior of followers does not influence the leadership style | Leadership style is highly dependent on the behavior of followers |
| The maturity of the follower does not influence the leadership style | Maturity of the people determines the leadership style. |
Pro and cons of SLM
| Pros | Cons |
| It is simple hence easy to apply | It does not apply to managers who have limited power |
| It focuses on the competencies and maturity of followers | It is less applicable in situations involving complicity of tasks and time constraints. |
| It is a simple scale which enhances the leadership style | Under realistic conditions, it does not seem to bear the desired predictions. |
Pros and Cons of Normative decision model
| Pros | Cons |
| The decision making process is fast since there is no consultation of the followers | The information obtained from the team members may not be sufficient to enable decision making |
| It helps the leader to arrive at quality decisions. | Consulting all the team members requires sufficient time which might not be available |
| Tere is a high probability of the team members accepting the decisions made by the leader. | The decisions are made under unclear circumstances as it depends on the information obtained from the team members. |
Conclusion
Using SLM, a leader should have the necessary skills to help influence the behavior of team members.
In normative decision model, the team members provide information but they do no participate in decision making.
The main difference between the two is that in SLM, the followers highly influence the decisions while in normative decision model, the input of followers is used in decision making.
Using SLM, different leadership styles are applied in different scenarios for effective leadership.
