Leadership Interview:
a. This assignment will require that you identify an RN that you see as a “leader.” This nurse leader can function in any nursing capacity (professor, administrator, or staff nurse).
b. Describe the nurse, his/her role in nursing and why you have identified this individual as a leader.
c. What are his/her skills & talents?
d. Interview the individual and elicit the following information during the conversation:
· Describe your leadership journey. (How did you develop the skills necessary to become a leader? Did you seek leadership or did leadership positions just “fall into your lap?” Do you enjoy your role as a leader? Why or why not?)
· Do you use any particular nursing theory of leadership? If so, which one do you use? Can you provide an example of when you might have implemented that particular leadership theory?
· What do you perceive to be the most important skills of a leader? Why have you identified those?
· What do you perceive to be the least desired characteristic/s in a leader?
· What was the most challenging leadership situation you have ever confronted and how did you handle it?
· What advice do you have for a new nurse, just starting out in the profession regarding leadership? What skills do you suggest I work on in order to thrive as a nurse leader?
· Conclude the journal with a summary that outlines what you have learned from this interview and how you might use the information that you received from the interview in your nursing practice.
