 Leadership Defined

Leadership has been described from various perspectives and defined by different concepts. Based on the descriptions of leadership provided in this week’s lecture and readings, present a personal definition of leadership and explain why your definition is appropriate and relevant to the practice of leadership today. Provide an example of a current leader who embodies this definition. Explain how this individual is a relevant example of your personal definition of leadership.

 Theories of Leadership

Many schools of thought have developed throughout history that propose various theories about the source and development of leaders, how leaders are discovered, and how they can be identified. Early leadership theories focused on the qualities that distinguished leaders from followers; subsequent theories looked at other variables such as situational factors and skill levels. Evaluate the similarities and differences between two approaches or theories of leadership: the trait approach and behavioral theory; the Situational Leadership® Model and authentic leadership theory; or the transformational and transactional leadership theories. Begin by providing a brief summary of the two approaches or theories of leadership you have chosen to analyze. Then, examine the common characteristics and differences between the two approaches or theories you selected.  Use a minimum of two scholarly sources to support your post. Cite your sources according to APA style as outlined in the Writing Center.

 Ethical Leadership

Companies have become increasingly aware of the advantages that being ethically conscious have to offer, especially in the global economy. Using the overview of ethical leadership provided in this week’s lecture and readings, in what way can ethical business practices increase organizational competitiveness in their respective industries and help to further substantiate the notion that an ethical culture is good for business? Conversely, how does unethical leadership adversely affect the organization’s bottom line? What impact can a leader’s position on ethics have on the culture of an organization?

 Ethical Organizational Culture

What is the relationship between a leader’s responsibility for ethical behavior and the idea of an ethical organizational culture? Research a specific nonfictional leader of your choice and provide examples of the behaviors this leader exhibits that highlight the role of ethics in leadership. Answer the following in your post:

· Can a leader’s public and private morality be distinguished? Should they be?

· Can a bad person be a good leader?

· Why is it important for leaders to demonstrate ethical conduct?

· Which is more important for improving ethical values in an organization: a code of ethics, leader behavior, or employee training?

 Leadership Effectiveness

The base rate of managerial incompetence is estimated to be 50 to 75%. This means that a majority of people in positions of authority have difficulties getting a group of people to work effectively together or get results.

1. What do you think about this percentage? For example, is it too high or too low, and why?

2. Think about the effective and ineffective leaders for whom you have worked. Using the overview of leader traits and skills provided in this week’s lecture and readings, what traits did the effective leaders possess and/or what behaviors did they exhibit that caused them to get results?

3. What traits and/or behaviors did the ineffective leaders demonstrate?

4.  Leadership Relations

A critical component of a leader’s success is their ability to develop effective relationships with their superiors, their co-workers, and their subordinates.  Propose and discuss at least three strategies a leader should adopt to enhance their relationships with superiors, co-workers and subordinates.  Discuss the importance of developing relationships within all levels of the organization.
