Ken Blanchard, a leadership author stated, “If God had wanted us to talk more than listen, He would have given us two mouths rather than two ears.” He has a good point!

Edgar Watson Howe once joked, “No man would listen to you talk if he didn’t know it was his turn next.” But you know what; the more one thinks about this ‘joke’ he may just have something!

Effective communication has to be one of the most important goals, not only as leaders, but also in your relationships with others including your spouses and children. Communication seems to be the one thing that most people in organizations say needs improvement. I

Julian Treasure, in this TED talk, offerd seven deadly sins of speaking which has organizational implications.

Discussion

Which of the seven deadly sins of speaking do you see most often in your workplace? What are the consequences of this type of speech? If we followed Treasure’s HAIL model in our workplace, how would our workplace change?

Part 2 instructions

Chapter 8 Discussion

This week you began studying how to lead teams, which means understanding people and the impact of diversity for mission success. Lussier and Achua (2013) stated that a leader’s personal role is crucial in leading teams. This is especially true since many organizations are giving additional responsibilities to teams and are depending on team leaders. Thus, it is wise that you discuss this very subject and share ideas and experiences. In addition, you will discuss the related topic of group meetings and the impact of effective leadership.

Discussion

1. Think of a work situation in which you were required to do a lot of creative thinking, or in which your job required doing a lot of very creative things. In what ways did the organization and your immediate supervisor or leader facilitate or hinder your effectiveness? Use the discussion of top management and the team leaders’ roles in facilitating creativity listed in chapter 8 as your guide.

2. Recall a meeting you attended. Did you receive an agenda prior to the meeting? How well did the leader conduct the meeting? Give ideas on how the meeting could have been improved. Did the group have any problem members? How well did the leader handle them?
