What are the problems and possible explanations for these problems?

The problems at Good Care Hospital are an increase in nurse turnover, an increase in nurses taking sick leave, and frequent transfer requests by student nurses to other facilities. According to the nursing administrator, the rate of nurse turnovers has increased which is an alarming human resource problem. Turnovers can be an issue caused by poor employee satisfaction (Hagan, Curtis, 2018). The problem of nurse turnovers should be addressed because it affects the organization's services, hospital revenues, staffing processes, and managerial processes. Nurse turnovers also increase costs because of the need to employ and train other staff. Comment by Reybitz, Graham: Regarding the conclusion, does she know what the problem is?

What are the potential sources for these problems?

The possible source of the problems is the issue of nurses being threatened or verbally confronted. Threats do not only affect the quality of work and productivity but also job satisfaction. Employees’ safety is important and every employee would wish to work in an environment that is safe (Hagan, Curtis, 2018). Job satisfaction is a key factor in turnover that organizations must investigate to increase employee retention. Job satisfaction is associated with work ethics, higher job performance, higher nurses’ enthusiasm, and reduced absenteeism, turnover and fatigue (De Sousa Sabbagha et al., 2018). What information does Nurse Adams need, and how should she gather this information?

Nurse Adams needs to know why there is an increase in nurse turnover, nurses taking sick leave, and frequent transfer requests by student nurses to other facilities. She needs to investigate the antecedents of nurses’ intentions to leave. She can gather this information by talking to individual nurses and students or getting information from staff. This will help her to identify the factors affecting nurses’ and students’ intentions to leave. Identifying such factors will help in mitigating the problems. What could be done to resolve the problems?

Employee retention is essential for effective business. The first thing that should be done in Good Care Hospital is to improve employee safety. Staff turnover leads to the loss of valuable and skilled workers which is extremely damaging to the hospital. Increasing safety measures boosts staff morale, increases productivity, increases staff confidence in the hospital, and increases revenues (De Sousa Sabbagha et al., 2018). These factors will increase staff retention and the hospital’s reputation. The first step in achieving safety in the hospital is investigating the case of nurses being threatened or verbally confronted to prevent such behaviors. In addition, the hospital should identify the nurses’ and students’ needs to offer satisfaction. Comment by Reybitz, Graham: I am a bit confused here. Does she know why there is high turnover already? I thought she was investigating it. How is she supposed to fix a problem she is not sure where the cause is?
