Leadership models
Introduction
Effective leadership is essential to the success of any organization regardless of the leader's title across the organization. It helps an organization set goals and provides actions which reinforce those goals. Leaders must always be present in all levels of an organization and should respond quickly to changing demands when making difficult decisions. For instance, one's leadership skills are displayed and determined by how employee get involved during operations or when undertaking some duties. Throughout this essay, I will offer my experience when I was working under a leader in a rehab department. I will also analyze various ways through which different models influenced leadership and conclude on ways to revise or improve them.
Concrete Experience
The experience I have is from my leader whom I was working under in our Rehab department. He kept its operations run steadily across all day to day operations. I worked under his leadership for about two years, and I can honestly testify that he was a competent manager. He made sure the rehabilitation unit was able to hold more residents, keeping all employees busy. They offered regular care and daily therapy services to all patients. He always asked for my opinions when making decisions so that we can share the best ideas on how to operate the department. We had regular meetings to discuss issues on employee motivation and compensation.
For effective leadership, decision making becomes a sensitive part. Its responses, influence, and actions should be conducted in harmony with all employees and without delay. Although at some cases making decisions was difficult, and not accepted by some employees, this leader was committed to making his choices rigid regardless of the consequences. He created a friendly working environment where all employee could share their opinions. He further exercised different forms of leadership power to motivate employees. Along with the quality of decisions, he was making; another essential aspect was in the buy-in activities associating to daily operations. Through my help, we made sure the style of leadership was a key determinant to successful performance and help other employees become more productive.
Reflective Observation
In this case, I will reflect on how the leader I was working under made decisions when deliberating duties. During that time, I was able to learn different ways of making decisions and motivating employees. His decisions helped all employees to realize their worthiness in the department. At all times, my thoughts were revolving around improving employee performance. For instance, during that period, I was able to notice employee motivation acts as one of the most challenging aspects to control, forecast, quantify, and classify. However, different decisions influence the levels at which employees can be motivated depending on how they perform organizational duties as well as personal workplace culture.
During this period, all employee was able to appreciate his services because he cared about their inputs. Things were different because his leaderships mainly consisted of the physiological requirements of the workforce. He focused on adequate compensation to their work, physical working environment, department and administrative policies, interpersonal relationships, job security, fringe benefits, and status at work. By considering these factors, operations were different, and he was able to help the management to control the employee satisfaction levels, thus retaining them back to their jobs.
Abstract Conceptualization
From the leaders' way of leadership, all employees had maximum cooperation making the Rehab department as the best in performance. All employees had built a positive attitude towards their work positions. The reason behind this was that, the fact that all employees had appreciated his leadership strategies which attributed to professional makeup of employee roles. During the decision making and motivation process as an efficient leader, he was compelling employees to do things which they could have otherwise done. He made sure all employee was committed to internalize in his goals efficiently. Throughout his leadership, he followed the normative decision-making model; Vroom-Yetton-Jago decision tree and transformational leadership to inspire his followers according to, (Vroom, & Yetton, 2013). Through such strategies, employee, performance quality production followed continually.
When motivating and managing teams, leadership, and power work closely together. In this case, this leader followed the five power types developed by John French and Bertram Raven in 1995 (Management, 2014). In this case, this leader believed by using this power; he could integrate the efficient of all employees of which he did. Those five powers included;
a. Legitimate: Believing that someone has the right to make demands of others as well as receive compliance and obedience.
b. Reward: Having the power to compensate followers in return for their compliance formally.
c. Expert: Having a higher skill level than followers
d. Referent: Obtaining respect from others solely based on physical appearance and their worthiness.
e. Coercive: Having the power and ability to inflict consequences for lack of compliance.
As per these powers, our leader falls under coercive. In duties, he understood our expectations and that there will be consequences should we not perform our responsibilities as scheduled in the rehab. As a manager, he helped when needed and answer any questions we have. However, he stood in an authority position, to enforce basic requirements to other staff and residents.
All employees were compliance and performed their duties as allocated by the leader. However, he could not exert many tasks than required. Some of the employees were resistance in that, whenever this leader made decisions which did not favor them, they could resist and oppose his directions (Eveland, n.d.). However, he could seek our help as junior leaders to help him fix the issue.
Active Experimentation
From my experience and the described models, I have learned that effective leadership helps an organization gain positive impacts. It enables employees to become more confident in their duties, gain responsibility, and create an efficient working environment which assists in development and growth. In general, it turns employees into different success ventures based on the motivational models used to retain them. Additionally, it helps employees participate in decision making, thus enhancing growth in the organization. I am planning to practice more on the leadership powers so that I can be competent when making decisions.
Conclusion
From my evaluation, effective leadership is vital in a case where an organization plan to achieve specific business opportunities. When leading employees, it is essential to follow the three behaviors (commitment, compliance, or resistance) helps a leader to determine the key ways to handle them easily. In this case, our leader utilized various models meant to strengthen and improve employee's performance in the organization. I also realized it is vital to involve employees when making decisions since they help minimize failures during implementation.
