Introduction

Leadership can be exhibited in different ways where the leaders use different methods of administration to influence the people. The leaders also have different beliefs and attitudes. Colin Kaepernick was born in Milwaukee in 1987. He was adopted at an early age of about two weeks by white parents even though he was bi-racial. He began playing football when he was at the age of eight years which elevated him to the quarterback. When he joined the high school at John H. Pitman High School, he became an all successful football although the major college football programs later passed him. This is because he had developed a throwing problem which depicted problems in his playing. This was a challenge that saw him pushed to the back throughout the rookie season (Branch, 2017).

After college, Collin was able to adapt to the competition, and he was soon dominating the NFL and won a few other games. Some of the significant challenges include a shoulder injury in 2015 when he also lost his starting job and started wishing for his trade off to another team. In August 2016 Colin also got into a controversial debate when he did not stand for the National Anthem. Throughout this period up to 2017 he still did not have a team when, and in October 2017, he filed a lawsuit against the NFL owners’ collusion who failed to offer him employment. This is because Collins had provided exemplary leadership and advocating for equality and social justice. In December 2017 he was awarded the Eason Monroe Courageous Advocate Award. In September 2018, he has announced the face of Nike (Branch, 2017).

Leader evaluation

Colin is a football player who is a polarizing figure in American sports with a popular culture that is galvanizing and so appreciated by the people and his fans. He has displayed leadership in different ways. Kouzes and Posner suggest the Five Practices of Effective Leaders in analyzing and evaluating leaders (Hutton, 2012). This model shows that leadership is not about personality but behavior and observable skills. Even when leaders have diverse characteristics regarding age, culture or ethnicity. This model is essential when developing a non-obstructed path for leaders and teams. These models show that every person is a leader despite their official titles and roles.

Model the way

The first practice is to model the way. Hutton (2012), points out that by shaping the way, leaders can model the way by clarifying the way and setting an example to the people through their behaviors, attitudes and also in their effectiveness. One of the best ways to fix by example is to set principles that they can follow because the individuals being led will always consider the leader’s values and behaviors. They can also create standards of pointing where there are interim goals that should be followed by the team being led.

Colin leads by modeling the way. During the NFL, he took his chances by being an instigator and kneeling during the singing of the National Anthem as a protest against police brutality. By doing this, he risked his public relations and most importantly, his career. Through his risks, he was able to communicate his belief and attitudes towards what he figures out as his rights. One of the impacts this had is that leaders should not only speak of what they think should be done and encourage people to do that but they should have the authority to do what they believe in so that the rest of the people are enticed in understanding their rights and in their leaders (Bonnell, 2018).

Colin can demonstrate that he is courageous and he can stand for the oppressed. Even though his move was unpopular, risky and costly, he was able to show that his belief on the rights of African-Americans was serious and people should be against police brutality. Colin was also able to show patriotism by ensuring that he spoke out on the nation's shortcomings. He exhibits not only patriotism but also nationalism (Bonnell, 2018).

Inspire a shared vision

One of the attitudes of an exemplary leader is that they believe they can make a difference and are very passionate about what they do to meet these. They enlist their dreams and match them with the goals of the team they are leading to make a viable solution. They then work towards these goals by inspiring the rest of the people with positive possibilities for the future and ensure that what is supposed to be done is done. To gain commonality in the people, leaders can use effective leadership styles and strategies to lead such as effective communication and collaboration (Hutton, 2012).

Colin was able to create a social movement by creating attention to the system cruel and social injustice to the people. One of the shared vision of the African-American is to have equal rights especially protection and safe access to the fundamental rights. However, his message was misinterpreted to be against the NFL beliefs and to the extent of the anti-American arguments against him (McKenzie, 2018). He passed a message of inclusion despite his position, and maybe he was never affected by the situation.

One of the shared vision between Colin and the African-Americans is to have equal citizenship. The social movement he created by kneeling during the national anthem was that the country would become a team and a nation that values justice to all despite the disparities in races and ethnicity. Every person would have access to what they need to live. This is mainly to the poor and those divided by the political opinions. Colin made a move towards an equal public policy which was the greatest of the African-American (McKenzie, 2018).

Challenge the process

Kouzes and Posner pointed out in the model that an exemplary leader must challenge the process. They look for innovative ways in which they can introduce change in society and create opportunities in which the changes will be implemented. By testing the process, the leaders demonstrate that they understand about leadership which includes the ability to take risks and makes mistakes. However, the many failures do not weigh them, but they strengthen them by taking them as chances to learn. To gain collaboration with other people and those affected, the leader must show that there is a gap that exists in the current processes and techniques of leadership. It also shows that they are good decision makers and they are creative and problem solvers (Hutton, 2012).

Colin was able to show exemplary leadership by challenging the existing justice environment. By protesting during a national event, he was able to show that he could not stand a flag that oppresses African-Americans. He was also able to show that this course was more important than his career. He not only displayed that the American flag had no meaning but was also able to show that social equality is essential to all the citizens of the country. He was able to challenge the system and show that the state should have provided balance to all Americans by discouraging police brutality (Carpenter, 2017).

He drew attention to the social injustices in the society and was able to show to the people that there was a need for change. Since his protest, there has been a surge of protest that highlighted the racial inequality. These protests have been able to enhance the discussions on racial discrimination and national consciousness.

Enable others to act

There is a common saying that if one wants to go fast, they should move alone but if they're going to walk far, they must run as a team. Exemplary leaders should have the ability to collaborate and build a spirited group. They should also form a mutual respect and recognition to the efforts of the team members. This will not only enable human dignity but will also allow others to act. This will also ensure that the people operate effectively and work hard towards fulfilling the vision and goals that are shared (Hutton, 2012).

After the protest, he muted and let his gesture work. By then he made his actions lead the people, and through that, he was able to create a national movement that would enhance equality. His supporters having been inspired by his response, created national protests that increased discussions against inequality. He also showed an excellent decision making by choosing his action to protest; he gave the supporters a chance to trust him and also ensure that the relationship between Colin and his followers. This created a self-efficacy system to act towards the shared activities.

Encourage the heart

By recognizing the efforts of the people, the leader and supporters can celebrate the shared values and victories. The leaders should have the ability to encourage team members and encourage personal growth. By supporting the heart, the leader can accomplish extraordinary things that keep the hopes of the supporters high in achieving their needs.

Colin was able to demonstrate humility by being patient in describing what he wanted in a series of protest of the national anthem. Even if the reactions of the different parties were adverse and distracted him from celebrating his success. One of his mottos includes, ‘believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything.’ He began a protest against social injustice and the discussions against it has discouraged racism and has begun a revolution towards an equal society. According to the president, Donald Trump, he should find a country that works for him is a view that shows Collins to be a traitor. On the other hand, Harry Edwards, an activist, shows Collins to be a hero who fights for civil rights and tends to devolve from partisan politics and emotional debates especially from political rituals and racial inequalities. Collins has become a standard, silent but straightforward gesture having knelt for the national anthem during the quarterback in a bid to protest against social injustice that led to the prejudice of African- Americans at the hands of the police.

How the leaders demonstrated a leadership theory

Colin Kaepernick used adaptive leadership as a leadership style. Adaptive leadership is a form is designed to help an individual leader in dealing with consequences in uncertain times. These leaders can create changes and using different techniques that can solve technical challenges (Cojocar, 2008). One of the advantages that he took is that football is a neutral game regarding race and also politics. He used this to create awareness about his beliefs and attitudes. He was then able to create an environment in which there would be public and that would create a reaction. He was able to protest against the social injustices done to the African-Americans. One of the responses to Colin's protest include conversations that were built around the social injustice issues.

By protesting during one of the important social events in the country, he was able to create attention towards the attention. In a changing world where there are different views towards celebrities and what is expected of them, Colin can demonstrate that the solution and changes can be shown through effective leadership. He is also able to confirm that the voices can be placed in any environment provided they are heard, and the necessary attention is created.

Summary

Colin demonstrates his leadership style and a strong personality towards leadership and fighting towards the rights of the people. Despite his abilities in playing football, he reflects his attitude towards humanity and social justice. He also a strong sense of his right to expression by putting a protest against social injustice and even against the national flag. It also demonstrates his decision-making abilities by deciding to risk his career and express his values and beliefs towards equality. By donating money to organizations that work for justice, Colin is not only able to work towards humanity but was able to show actions beyond his speech.

Colin's personality can be described as a hero. As a person with a white origin, he was able to demonstrate patriotism by showing that every citizen counts. He also becomes Nike's star and proved that Africa-Americans are also citizens who are equal and deserve equal rights and access to resources such as other citizens. He tried to discourage the stereotypes towards the African-Americans and their abilities by campaigning for the products of Nike which had been resented in national contests. He is also a leader who can create better race relations and interactions between the people. He has received full support from the anti-racism organization because he is strong-willed and selfless who puts the welfare of the people he believes in before his by risking his career.

Conclusion

Leaders are essential in the society as they not only lead the direction but they also influence others in the right pathway and direction. Collins Kaepernick has demonstrated his leadership skills through effective use of skills and behaviors. The Five Practices of Effective Leaders usually analyze leadership effectiveness. This model will be used to evaluate Collin's leadership and how he has been able to impact society. Exemplary leadership is about positively changing people.
