The concept of leadership as a "vocation" greatly distinguishes leadership from a job, career, or what one simply does for a living. A vocation can be thought of as one's calling. Vocation is often associated with the clergy or missionaries who feel called by a higher power to fulfill a specific purpose. Vocation is also a concept associated with careers like teachers, emergency responders, doctors, or other health care professionals who feel strongly compelled to dedicate their own lives to improving the lives of those whom they serve. Consider your own view of leadership. How does understanding leadership as a vocation inform your understanding of the personal and moral commitments required of leaders? If leadership is not a job, but a calling, what responsibilities do leaders have towards their position, their organization, and their followers?

Leadership is not a job, it is not about a career, it is a calling. However, managers do a job, and this is the primary difference between a manager and a leader. Being an in charge of warehouse unit of a retail store, I do my work as a mission. Leadership is about inspiring others to accomplish a common goal. I believe leadership is not only associated with the social work jobs such as doctor, health care professional or teachers. Even a CEO of a tech company can adopt an ethical and effective leadership. Likewise, a warehouse in charge like me can foster leadership attributes in himself. A leader always shows right direction to its followers. Leader set goals to achieve and inspire his team to strive for those goals. A leader motivates its subordinated and bolsters knowledge sharing among the teammates. Moreover, a leader also fosters trust within the team. A leader is always honest and self-confident. Being a warehouse in charge I have set a goal of increasing the productivity and inspire my subordinates to strive for to augment the revenues, produce cost-effective quality and use optimum level of resources (Grand Canyon University, 2015).

Leadership is a complex process that requires leaders to critically appraise the circumstances in which they find themselves to best determine how to lead and influence those around them. There are multiple tactics a leader can employ in any given circumstance to influence a situation or their followers. Compare two leaders you have dealt with in the past. What different tactics did these leaders employ to influence situations or people? Which tactics were successful? Which tactics were not successful? As a leader, how can you critically appraise situations to make sure you select appropriate tactics for influencing a given situation?

Being a substance abuse counselor I have got a chance to meet with different professionals having various leadership skills. One of my leader, who was inspirational always focuses on listening than talking. He, in fact, was a good listener and a problem solver. Moreover, he never judged anyone and always try to get the deep empathy of the issues no matter how aggravated they are. He always considers ethical code of conduct while dealing with his clients. Once, he revealed that he is physically attracted to her client and the next day he referred her to the other nearest counselor. Hence, he always exudes ethical leadership.

One of my friend who was a doctor and owns his personal clinic depict poor leadership. He always orders his subordinates instead of helping them in the case of emergency and rush hours he just orders them in a rude manner. Among the preceding scenarios, the former one exudes a successful leadership whereas, later one did not show much successful leadership. The ethical leadership is always one of the most plausible way of resolving problems.

1      Based on the skills approach, how would you assess Dr. Wood’s leadership and his relationship to the members of the Elder Care Project team? Will the project be successful?

The skills and knowledge possessed by Dr. Wood are profound, he possesses all the primary qualities of an effective leader. It seems like Dr. Wood can accomplish the task using his unprecedented problem-solving skills but he still has some weaknesses too. He needs to ameliorate his social judgment skills. He needs improvement when it is about teamwork. He gets panic and does not discern the hard work of his team, he only perceives the weaknesses. Mr. Wood should learn to deal with people here, as it is evident that he lacks some very basic communication and social skills. This can potentially become a source of tribulations among the team members.

2. Does Dr. Wood have the skills necessary to be an effective leader of this research team?

The primary skills of effective leadership are evident in Dr. Wood. These skills were conspicuous when the team needed a pamphlet but did not possess the funds for it. Dr. Wood was able to glean the funds. In this way, he flaunted he concerns to make this project successful. He just needs to ameliorate his social skills.

3. The skills model describes three important competencies for leaders: problem-solving skills, social judgment skills, and knowledge. If you were to coach Dr. Wood using this model, what competencies would you address with him? What changes would you suggest that he make in his leadership?

If I have to coach Dr. Wood I would definitely tell Dr. Wood that he possesses some unprecedented problem-solving skills and impeccable knowledge. He can easily accomplish a task in a limited resources which flaunts his experience and strategic mind. Furthermore, the knowledge he possesses, pertaining to the topic is also concrete. The only thing that needs to be improved is social judgment skills. Hence, I would foster social judgment skills in Mr. Wood and tell him to get a feedback from his team about his performance, which will drive him to introspect, in turn, he will be able to identify his mistakes.

Effective leaders are always flexible they can easily transform their leadership from one style to another keeping in view the situation. Mark embarked his journey by setting his priorities and by being task oriented. His perpetual compliance with the authority indicates towards his effective leadership style. He set his priorities to accomplish the departmental goals. He had a stark empathy for his leadership style which helped him to maintain his productivity and foster an invincible relationship with his coworkers and subordinates (Northouse, 2016).

Mark’s impeccable leadership style is a source of balance between the relationship with their coworkers and departmental priorities. He is flexible enough to solve any problem such as if it is about giving priority to department priorities or his personal relationship, he would revive his authority compliance style, to rearrange his department priorities which profoundly exudes his effective leadership style.

According to the Blake and Mouton’s grid, I would score Mark (9, 9) in team management. As Mark give value to his interpersonal relationships. On the other hand, he is also task oriented to solve many problems. Mark is supportive to his team and always prioritize them. In this way, they accomplish any task together. He also takes care of his peers by fostering a congenial environment. Mark is able to maintain a balance between his tasks and duties. He effectively maintains balance between work and fun and skillfully manages his team to get the work done. Mark can successfully lead the organization if he continues to implement his leadership skills.

As discussed in Topic 1, effective leaders apply various leadership tactics depending upon the contexts in which they find themselves. Consider the leadership tactics, traits, or models you find yourself drawn to as a leader. Why are you drawn to these particular tactics, traits, or models? How do they interconnect with your own personal, moral, ethical, or religious beliefs? Do you think the personal, moral, ethical, or religious beliefs of leaders can interfere with their ability to effectively lead? Why or why not?

There are multiple traits and tactics for the effective leadership. I am working as a supervisor at a warehouse and the leadership skills, traits and model I follow are motivation, knowledge sharing, trust, integrity, and passion. These leadership tactics draw me towards an ethical leadership. I usually implement different leadership styles/models in my life keeping in view the situation. I generally follow democratic leadership style. I encourage my subordinates to share knowledge with each other without any hesitation. I encourage them to participate in decision making. These leadership tactics help the leader or manager to resolve issues at an organizational level and keep the employees on the right track. It eventually augments the organizational productivity.

My personal, moral and religious beliefs starkly aligned with the preceding tactics and skills of leaders. I strongly believe in knowledge sharing, personal growth, effective communication and better listening skills. Therefore, I always try to listen to others, encourage them to participate and understand their point of view. I believe that some people are born to be a leader, their personal, ethical and moral beliefs, take to leading positions where they can practice effective leadership, hence if the personal, moral or religious beliefs do not comply with the leadership tactics then a person would not be an effective leader (Mind Tools, 2017).

Discussion 3 DQ 2

Select a leader you believe successfully led an organization through a crisis or challenge (e.g., public relations crisis, marketing mishap, shift in market demand, reorganization). Identify the leader and the company with which the leader is affiliated. Provide brief context for the crisis or challenge. Identify the leadership models and approaches that were employed in the handling of the situation. Finally, explain why you think the leadership was particularly effective in this context.

Mark Zuckerberg

Mark Zuckberg is the ideal image of a leader with drive but will also stand by his team thru the good and bad times. As the co-founder of Facebook which happens to be one of the most popular and most used sites today. Mark has shown leadership qualities such as being a

1- Strong Communicator

2- Motivator

3- Clear Values

The Facebook Cambridge Analytica Scandal was almost the breaking point for Mark Zuckerberg due to a data privacy hack. March of 2018 The New York Times and the Guardian Reported that a data mining firm named Cambridge Analytica that worked on Donald Trumps presidential campaign had improperly obtained access to more than 50 million user profiles. It is believed that the firm could have used that data to gain an unfair advantage in targeting voters. Mark Zuckerberg addressed this via Facebook and also gave CNN an interview.

This is the biggest public relations crisis Facebook has faced since the aftermath of the 2016 election. Senators called on Mr Zuckerberg to testify, the Federal Trade Commission started an investigation. British Authorities investigated Zuckerberg and for a time Facebook stock started to decline drastically.

To simplify the scandal – the company Cambridge had the idea that if they observed your likes the company was able to begin to understand your personality and then used that to effectively target the right political advertising that would work for you. This company obtained this information in violation of Facebook rules and didn’t say anything to anyone.

Trust was lost in Facebook- where Mark stepped in as a leader- he stood by his company. For strong communication in example is simple- When he took the stand in court and addressed all questions directed towards him in a very honest and upfront manner not trying to make excuses but face this issue and was willing to take full responsibility for it. He not only apologized for the mishap of the company but also went publicly to apologize on behalf of his company and immediately found ways to fix the wrong doing and mishaps of this scandal. (The Gaurdian, n.d.)

“This was a major breach of trust and I am really sorry that this happened, we have a basic responsibility to protect peoples data and if we cant do that then we don’t deserve to have the opportunity to serve people”

Mark believed in purpose for people – he motivated his team and new employees to find creating motivation ways to innovation

"I think as a company, if you can get those two things right--having a clear direction on what you are trying to do and bringing in great people who can execute on the stuff--then you can do pretty well." --Mark Zuckerberg

What are the strengths and weakness of transformational leadership theory and leader-member theory (LMX)? How might your knowledge of the LMX theory help you to become a better leader?

Me

Re:Topic 4 DQ 1

As the name suggests, transformational leadership refer to the transformational of the individuals. Transformational leadership makes people want change, improvement and to be led. The transformational leadership can potentially ameliorate the organizational effectiveness. Transformational leadership recognize the contemporary situation of an organization and precisely formulate the vision to augment the productivity of an organization. Passion and enthusiasm are the conspicuous strengths of the transformational leadership. Apart from its strengths, transformational leadership also has some weaknesses. For instance, it is time-consuming. A transformational leader has to invest a substantial amount of time persuade its followers (Travis, 2017).

Likewise, leader-member exchange (LMX) is also a very effective leadership style. However, if it is not used meticulously it becomes conducive to horrifying outcomes, it may even halt the productivity. Leaders when form relationships with their subordinates actually know their strengths and weaknesses. In this way, leaders can help their subordinates to overcome their weaknesses. Leader-member exchange stir trust among the leader and the group and reinforce knowledge sharing. It bolsters the morale of the individuals and spurs the sense of morality among the subordinates. However, if the leaders are unable to bolster sound relationship with their subordinates, it may lead to jealousy and eventually rule out trust among the group and a leader. The rotten relationship among the group and leader, in turn, quash the loyalty and aggravate the organizational culture (Kangas, 2013).

I am vehemently inspired by the strengths of the LMX theory. I starkly believe that proper and frugal implementation of the LMX theory is conducive to organizational effectiveness. I will enable me to have good and sound relationships with my subordinates. In this way, I will stir the teamwork and revoke all the hesitations among my subordinates. I will also help to stir friendly organizational culture without any impediment in the way of knowledge sharing and it will be an impetus to the productivity of an organization.

Re:Topic 4 DQ 2

The organization to which I belonged in the past was a financial institute which starkly lacked transformational leadership and it was explicitly effecting its employee’s performance. The lack of trust between the employees and employers further exacerbated the organizational effectiveness. The managers were biased and leg pulling was pervasive. Transformational leadership is an invincible style of management. It can potentially motivate the employees which, in turn, enhance the organizational effectiveness. Likewise, leader-member theory stirs different training and development opportunities. These opportunities ameliorate employees’ performance and eventually conjure up organizational performance. In order to imply a transformational leadership to ameliorate the organizational effectiveness, I would have to be tactical, and strategic. Beyond these primary skills such as managing the employees, monitoring their performance I would need to form a vision ( Root III, 2018). Likewise, I would apply the leader-member theory at my organization by fostering the training programs where I would share my knowledge with my subordinates and teach them about effective decision making. I would also organize the congenial meetings for the employees where I will encourage them to discuss their opinions freely.

Re:Topic 5 DQ 1

Authentic leaders are the ones who are honest and engage themselves in right things, who always become true to themselves and others and who are always open to others. Authentic leaders always have a truthful relationship with their followers. One of the great examples of authentic leadership is Martin Luther King. King Martin Luther possessed all these preceding aspects of authentic leadership. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr was a successful, authentic leader of a civil right movement for African Americans in the United States. He skillfully led the movement in a non-violent way. He fostered a vehement trust in his followers for himself through his invincible speeches. His self-confidence was his major trait. He had full confidence in his actions. With his strong verbal skills, Dr. Martin occupies a place in the heart of the followers. Dr. Martin at a very early stage of his life opted a path of self-awareness. Martin Luther King practiced a vehement authentic leadership through transparency and clarity, with which he imparted his dream for peace and equality. It is evident that authentic leadership is based on the trust between the leader and follower. This trust can only be fostered when a leader is transparent, honest and self-determined. This kind of leadership plays an imperative in ameliorating the organizational productivity and its culture. The trust among the leaders and team members lead to knowledge sharing, which in turn, increases the organizational productivity (Avolio & Wernsing, 2008).

What leadership behaviors would you expect from a Christian servant leader and how might those behaviors differ from someone who is not a servant leader. Why or why not?

Re:Topic 5 DQ 2

Servant leadership is based on the natural feelings. It is more like a philosophy with an intact set of practices that enriches the lives of the people by love and care, it stirs a good, caring and just world. Christian Servant Leadership possesses some particular traits that are different than other leadership styles such as empathy, healing and building community. Servant leadership emphasizes on serving others by love and care. Other types of leadership lack these particular aspects. That is why servant leadership is more pertinent to religion than a business. Servant leadership not only transcend Christianity but also other religions and cultures. Every religion bolsters love for humanity, every religion promotes peace and discourage violence. For instance, Islam is a sheer religion of love and peace. Hence, these religions profoundly exude the aspects of servant leadership.

Re:Topic 6 DQ 1

According to Heifetz et al., leadership is primarily about affecting the change that stirs the capability of individuals and organizations to prosper. The most important thing is that leader needs to understand the significance of adaption. Adaptive leadership is all about the leaders supporting people to adapt the environment and deal with their issues and challenged they encounter. It is indeed follower centered. It has multiple strengths such as it a collaborative process that is based on multiple dimensions and activities. In addition, it is follower centered which is another strength of adaptive leadership it directs attention towards the use of leadership skills and how they enable followers to address the opposing value system that is prevailed in the work environment. On the other hand, this approach is considered as pervasive and abstract. Moreover, it does not explain how the adaptive leadership integrates a moral dimension. Though an adaptive leader encourages his followers to solve their own problems, however, they do not tell the solution and sometimes encouragement is not enough, a concrete solution is needed to solve the problem that a leader is expected to provide.

Re:Topic 6 DQ 2

Having a work staff with preconceived cultural and religious beliefs is indeed challenging. It can spring up conflict in the workplace. As a leader I can use psychodynamic approach, I would definitely employ a group coaching technique. Northhouse suggests that group coaching is one of the most effective methodologies to implement psychodynamic principles to leadership development. This enables the group members to talk to each other openly and share their convictions. It is obvious that some group’s members will share more while others will remain aloof. It is important to listen meticulously, to learn about others especially the way they feel or their work styles. Sharing and listening would allow each one of us to give constructive feedback. This also augments tolerance among coworkers for each other convictions. Moreover, it allows the group members to work on their specific demeanor and set goals so that they can work together to achieve them. Group conversation will ameliorate an opportunity for a positive change.

Today's complex organizations often require the smooth, integrated functioning of teams across several functional areas. Leading of a team of diverse individuals is quite a challenge. Encouraging the effective collaboration of multiple teams of diverse individuals is even more challenging and requires skilled leaders who can understand and impart organizational vision to team members. Skilled leaders must also foster leadership skills in others to achieve collaboration and organizational success.

Imagine yourself in the complex situation of ensuring the integrated functioning of multiple teams. How prepared are you for such a challenge? What knowledge and skills will you need to acquire on your own leadership development journey to successfully prepare for such a challenge?

Re:Topic 7 DQ 1

For the smooth and integrated functioning of an organization, its internal factors (such as, organizational structure, management style etc.) and external factors (which include company’s mission, input, output social factors, and stakeholders) intermingle with each other. It can happen efficiently under effective leadership. Being a student of the liberal art system and working as a volunteer in different non-profit organizations I have gained adequate experience of leading culturally diverse teams or groups at institutes ( Duff, n.d.). Thus, at this point, I am potentially able to lead large teams in organizations. In order to do it efficiently, I first need to glean a stark knowledge about everyone in my team including their experience, expertise and their culture. It is crucial to know how different their culture is from ours. After getting the essential knowledge I would encourage my team members to share their knowledge with each other and most important impart their opinions in meetings that would be held frequently. I would encourage them to share knowledge with each other and I will respect their opinions. In order to transform the organization, I will have to start this process from myself first. By developing these qualities in myself I can inspire my followers to do the same (Nelson, 2015). In addition, I need to foster effective communication skills to impart the organizational vision to the team members.

Being a leader does not mean that you will never be a follower again in life. In fact, the best leaders are followers as well. At many points in life, leaders are held accountable to their subordinates and the individuals they lead. It is not hard for me to identify a time when I should leave a position of a boss and starts following. However, I can never stop leading, in fact, I can lead my fellows or my teammates even and even my seniors by being an inspirational figure. They can also do this but the main point here is to identify the situation when you get to know that you need to stop leading right now and starts following. Such situations emanates daily in our lives, especially at our workplace, for instance, whenever I call a meeting and encourage my team members to take active part in discussion, I have them stark authority to lead the discussion for a while and become their followers because for me as a leader, every opinion is worthy. In this way, I follow their point by listening to them meticulously. I encourage my subordinates to share their knowledge and lead the meeting when they are sharing their opinion. Even at a leading position, a leader always counts on his followers. Hence, I encourage my team members in discussions when we get ourselves engage in finding a solution to a particular problem, in such situations, everyone is a leader and everyone is a follower (Leaders that Follow, n.d.).

Re:Topic 8 DQ 1

Hillary Clinton is one of the renowned woman leaders of the world. The recent media attention towards the Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign raises some of the key challenges that female leaders bump into during work. For instance, the Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker criticized her shopping habit stating that her shopping habit has not let her remained in touch with the average Americans. As a matter of fact, the female leader encounters more impediments and challenges than a male leader in this world. These biases are actually stirred by the gender role expectation that put women leaders a disadvantage. Voters are often found reluctant to bolster a female candidate due to gender biases. For instance, the voters of Ohio never backed a female governor. This stereotypical mindset had played a substantial role in creating different obstacles for Hillary Clinton (HERSHCOVIS & WEINHARDT, 2017). President Donald Trump was found criticizing Hillary Clinton in a way that was highly obnoxious for her supporters. Trump’s unorthodoxy further stirred a challenge for her. It also spurred an unpredictability towards her ability to deal with him. Hillary Clinton despite losing the elections kept her cool throughout the campaign and handled her opponents with unprecedented diplomacy. She reportedly refused to give any comment on Trump’s perpetual attack calling him a bully and a person who is not qualified for a seat of a president (Cassidy, 2016).

The common characteristics of toxic leadership are arrogant, lack of confidence, irritable, incompetent, autocratic, unrealistic confidence and maladjusted. Toxic leadership is an assortment of self-centered attitude, motivations, and demeanors that have detrimental impacts on the subordinates. The worst possible consequence of toxic leadership is that it tends to ravage the entire organization. They foster bullying culture within the workplace and stir negative vibes for the employees, affecting the overall productivity. One of my friends has been persecuted by a toxic leadership at his workplace when his boss ordered him to treat a client offensively for the sake of his own personal revenge. In this way, the toxic leader tried to use his subordinate unethically for his own satisfaction or benefit. This is what toxic leadership looks like (Manson, n.d.).
