What are the characteristics of the Universal Model of Leadership?

How do your leadership characteristics compare to those in the model?

#2

While reading through chapter 4, the characteristics of the Universe Model are: Egocentric, Reactive, Integral, and Unitive. These characteristics of the Universe Model maps the stages of development that we grow into. The Leadership Circle correlates with the Universal Model, but it does not measure the development growth. “It is important to note that the LCP does not measure Stages of Development since that is a more complex undertaking than can be accomplished in a 360◦ assessment.” (Anderson & Adams, 2019, Chapter 4). The stages that we all go through helps molds us from what we use to know, to what we need to survive as an adult. “The structure of our identity determines how we show up as a leader, how we deploy ourselves into circumstances.” (Anderson & Adams, 2019, Chapter 4). As our identity changes, so does our leadership style.

The five levels of the Universal Model of leadership is based on one a self centered thought process of thinking eventually maturing into a system that must depend on others to get issues resolved (Adams & Anderson 2016). A leader at the reactive level usually cares about the business and the employees, and the short term goals as well as long term have to be accomplished. The Creativity level of leadership is a person that is innovative and opens up to other ideas so that groups are involved. Then the next level is integral leadership meaning that the person can handle complicated issues and fond resolution with being fair. The last level is Unitive being the highest level of understanding what is takes to lead others and be highly effective. Apparently if you are at this level it might be said that a person can lead at a global level (Adams & Anderson 2016).According to Adams & Anderson (2016), the universal leadership model is all about evolving and getting more mature as complexity is increased.

What are the characteristics of effective leadership performance?

What are the characteristics of ineffective leadership performance?

Do gender and culture affect the characteristics of leadership? If so, how?

"Do gender and culture affect the characteristics of leadership? If so, how?"

Both men and women can have gender and culture affect the distinctive traits of leadership roles. In some businesses the available talent in an organization just might happen to be more men than women based on the people that meet the talent qualification for a job (McKinsey and Company 2015). I was not surprised to read that in healthcare jobs, that more than 3/4 of the entry level jobs are being done by women (McKinsey and Company 2015). Honestly more men nurses are needed in the workforce and yet it is still predominantly women. It is possibly biased thinking that may be the cause of this. On the flip side, only about 33% of women are in senior management roles (McKinsey & Company).I found out that a decline is existing currently for women graduating from college with a technology type of degree. If I am going to interview someone for a job, I am still going to pick the best qualified person for the job and not based on gender. I am thankful to be able to go to college and get my MBA to make me one of the candidates for a job as I want to persevere and change my own circumstance. I am glad that men are now having opportunities to take paid leave when a spouse has a baby, or adopts a child(McKinsey and Company 2015). My point is that both genders are affected. A good leader can be any gender.

Effective an ineffective leadership performance is directly tied to the ratio of creative versus reactive styles and a balance of task and relationship. The universal leadership method study implies that effective leaders are on the creative side and strongly suggests that a proper balance in task and relationship focuses are key. Whereas ineffective leaders tend towards a reactive style. Reactive styles follow the norm and stay within comfort zones of conformity and established reactions, whereas creative styles move out of the comfort zone to build, challenge and learn. In the military we used to say "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger". That's what I think about when analyzing the success of effective leaders. Constantly learning, pushing getting outside the comfort zone...

In looking at the statistical data it appears that the Universal model of leadership and characteristics of effective leaders do cross cultural and gender divides. Although it does not appear that culture and gender affect the characteristics of leadership; cultures and genders do tend possess characteristics that affect leadership performance. Culturally in developing countries where patriarchal leadership is needed for that development the reactionary side of the model tends to vary, however on the creative side the traits are more the same despite cultural differences. When looking at Gender, gender does not have an effect on the characteristics of leadership, however women tend to possess more of the traits that make effective leaders, particularly as cultures move from patriarchal style leadership models to Relationship style models, particularly in the Relating area on the creative side.

What I find interesting about this topic? What I find interesting about leadership is anyone can be a leader. Growing up I lead others and sometimes I also followed. I always remember this old saying you must learn how to crawl, before you can walk. In life you sometimes must follow others to learn from them by their decisions. I remember as a teen I had a friend who was older than me who I looked up to. Until one day she led me in the wrong direction. I told myself I’m going to be my own leader and stay to myself. I evaluate myself as a leader by my hard work and actions. I like to encourage others to chase their dreams no matter if you must work a part-time or full-time. Make sure you set a couple of hours to the side for your own goals. A leader is someone who isn’t afraid to take charge of new challenges and lead others. I’m a leader to my children by making sure every day their being active (reading, coloring, playing, being creative, eating, learn how to use the potty, ensuring they drink plenty fluids, telling them right from wrong and learning more than what the world want them to). My daughter and son look up to me to keep them safe from any harm, take care of them and be a wonderful mother. I’m a leader on my job by stepping up to help make sure my customers get all the help they need and were satisfied with their visit at the company. I’m a leader at school by meeting the professor class requirements, turning in my assignments on time and communicating with classmates on daily responses.
