Description:

Introduction to music theory and application of rhythm, meter, scales, intervals, triads, musical terminology with the development

of aural and keyboard skills. Writing assignments, as appropriate to the discipline, are part of the course. No credit toward graduation.

Course

Objectives:

~ Become well versed in the fundamentals of rhythm, harmony and melody to begin reading/writing music notation

~ Appreciate the full scope of study and practice required to become a music professional

Learning

Outcomes:

~ Read and notate rhythmic values, meters, major and minor keys/scales, intervals, triads and 7th chords

~ Compose a 12-bar blues melody using manuscript and/or music notation software

POLICIES: 1. Zoom audio/video is not required but please consider a profile picture of your smiling face, your pet, famous person etc.

2. a. Active pursuit = timely completion/submission of coursework (practice/quiz reports and reviews)

b. 1 credit hour = 2 hours of coursework per week (this class is 3 credit hours)

c. minimum 6 hr./wk. (50m daily) practice routine is required to advance your skillset for practical application (not just to pass this class;)

3. a. Please submit all coursework to its correct Brightspace folder as a pdf, screenshot or picture (please disable HEIC for iOS 12+)

b. upload one file at a time so I can delete incorrect/misplaced submissions

c. I will not accept submissions without a description in the file name and/or assignment comments Ex. “Wk. 3 Practice” or “Review 2”

d. scan/pic of reviews from the textbook; for digital text use Acrobat DC to write on a PDF (or print to pdf or a screenshot)

h. MuseScore is strongly recommended for composition but not required (pencil is fine, but pen/ink? who do you think you are?)

4. a. Reports and that are missing these requirements will receive 2 points:

b. practice reports must be for at least 20 minutes, no minimum % correct, just keep working you can do it!

c. quiz reports must be at least 20 questions with 70% correct unless otherwise specified in the course outline
