Health Informatics Research Methods

Chapter 8

Research Reviews and Secondary Analysis

A research review is a systematic, exhaustive search for and examination of the authoritative literature related to the research question. This chapter walks through the process of conducting a research review. Pay particular attention to the steps in the process. This process mirrors your literature review for your project and you can apply many of the techniques detailed in this chapter.

Quality Appraisal and Data Synthesis

Taking an idea that is found in several places and re-stating it in your own words is called synthesis. Synthesis of the data is facilitated by the data map. In your project literature review, you can build your paper by collecting key references into idea headings and then using those collections to formulate the discussion. Refer to the sample research article. Note that the author makes a statement about what she read, then cites one or more sources. This internal citation tells the reader not only the source of the idea, but also how often that idea was identified in the literature that she read.
