Case Vignette. Lance has been feeling depressed and has had a decreased desire to eat, has lost weight and has been more isolated over the past month. Lance recently lost his job due to his company moving out of state. Lance started seeing Nina, a new social worker. Nina has experienced feeling similar to Lance in her past and encourages Lance to try herbs and natural remedies to improve his mood. Nina also encourages Lance to lose weight as she states that his weight “may” contribute to his feeling down about himself. Lance says that indeed he does have high blood pressure and wants to lose weight, but does not see it as a major problem. Lance is unsure if he should take Nina’s advice as he does not have money to invest on buying herbs and natural remedies, plus he fears that taking these recommendations may go against his doctor’s advice. Lance shares this with Nina, but she insists that Lance try these recommendations. She asks Lance to call her tomorrow after he purchases the herbs so she can give him more tips on how to prepare them.
