latino tobacco cessation problem statement
Problem #3
In order to achieve their overall mission, the center is looking into how tobacco cessation programs targeting the LatinX community can be improved. There are many existing programs but it is the opinion of the center that these programs may be improved if they are made more culturally specific to the LatinX community. As part of this task, the center would like the students to look into a variety of factors that might improve the outcome of these programs, including but not limited to specific settings and matching counselor and client.

SUBJECT: …??? for California Latino Smoking Cessation…???
I. Introduction/Problem Statement
-This (memo/brief/presentation) will address how tobacco cessation programs targeting the LatinX community can be improved (from problem #3).
-Research provided here will show a variety of factors that might improve the outcome of these programs, including but not limited to specific settings and matching counselor and client (from problem #3).
-Analysis here (in deliverables) of the limited amount (de Dios et al., 2019) of research/studies of the United States (US) Latino population will support that the success rate of smoking cessation programs is significantly disproportionate to all/most other groups.
-(add some significant/alarming/shocking rates affecting Latinos compared to other groups here Judi) … (de Dios et al., 2019), (Piñeiro et al., 2019).
Problem statement should be include:
· Why is this (see problem statement) a problem, or what do we need to know to address problem
· Where does the problem start
· Making an argument why this is important (as it applies to CA population)!
· Differences between Latino communities and other communities in relationship to tobacco cessation, and how do we know?? (Comparisons of and between Research Statistics/Studies)
· Gather evidence on existing CA programs for Latinos compared to other demographic groups. Comparisons must have solid relevance...(percentages, numbers of outcomes) and how to improve these outcomes (of tobacco cessation programs) for the CA Latino population. Also, comparisons of Latino population sub-groups (location/ethnicity...ie. Mexican, Guatemalan)

TITLE (Study findings):
Systematic Transcreation of Self-Help Smoking Cessation Materials for Hispanic/Latino Smokers: Improving Cultural Relevance and Acceptability
Topic:
“Focus group findings indicated a need to underscore several additional cultural characteristics and themes such as the need to address familism and unique stressors faced by immigrants and to provide information regarding nicotine replacement therapy. Learner verification findings indicated a need to further emphasize financial and social benefits of quitting smoking and to discuss how family and friends can support the quit attempt.
These steps led to the development of a Spanish-language smoking cessation intervention titled, Libre del cigarillo, por mi familia y por mí: Guía para dejar de fumar, that is currently being tested in a national randomized controlled trial.”

-Varenicline (Chantix).
Varenicline works by binding to nicotine receptors in the body, partly turning them on to reduce withdrawal symptoms, but also blocking them from the nicotine in cigarettes and thus making smoking less pleasurable. So far, varenicline has shown the highest quit-rate in studies.Jul 8, 2016

Topic: “Hispanic adults make up a growing share of US adult smokers, and smoking is a major preventable cause of disease and death among Hispanic adults. No previous study has compared trends in smoking cessation behaviors among Hispanic adults and non-Hispanic white adults over time. We examined trends in cessation behaviors among Hispanic and non-Hispanic white adult cigarette smokers during 2000–2015”

Title: Helping Latinos quit smoking
Topic:”Castro said current research initiatives regarding smoking dependence of Spanish-speaking Latinos might not implement culturally appropriate or reliably translated measures — such as survey or interview questions — to assess smoking dependence. Castro’s four-part research project , funded by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, aims to fill this gap by developing a grounded, multidimensional measure of smoking dependence that is valid to use with Spanish-speaking smokers.
