Analysis Tools When Working with Groups

Analysis tools are very applicable to finding the solution to problems either in business or life scenarios. Different business and individuals are using analysis tools to generate ideas and find the answer to challenges that they encounter in their daily operations. Various analysis tools can be used to create designs and find a solution to problems in business or life scenarios. Some of the tools are very applicable to finding solutions while working within a group. It is important to note that working with a group is a very delicate matter since different individuals always have different ideas (Shutterstock, 2015). This means that the group moderator needs to be very competent to generate results. It is good to note that working with a group to find solutions can be very challenging and hence it requires an individual to be very careful and apply the tools efficiently. Some of the tools that can be used when working with a group include brainstorming and multi-voting.

Brainstorming involves allowing some individuals to think through the problems of a situation by generating ideas based on the issues and the solution within a particular session (Six Sigma, 2018). For brainstorming with a group of individuals to be effective, various rules must be put into consideration (Six Sigma, 2018). First and foremost, it should be made clear to the participants that there are no right or wrong answers. Any opinion should count, and all participants should be able to give whatever they think is their answer without being subjected to criticism. It is important to note that during the brainstorm session, the moderator should give every participant a chance to speak to avoid being overshadowed by more vocal participants

Brainstorming can be followed with multi-voting in which the participants can be asked to vote and choose from the points discussed on what they think is the cause of the problem. Multi-voting allows the participants to narrow an extensive list of the reasons for a challenge to a few possible causes which apply to the situation (Multivoting, 2018). For multi-voting to be successful, it is essential to allow people to think objectively and not be swayed by vocals participants within the group. During the multi-voting process, members should be allowed to choose at least five reasons from the ones listed that they think are essential or cause of the problem.

I have applied brainstorm in a business decision-making process in my workplace to determine the cause of the decline in revenue over the last two business cycles. I was the group leader, and therefore, I was put in charge of the brainstorm session. The group first gathered some of the reasons they think might be the possible reasons for the decline in revenue, and then narrowed down by doing a multi-vote to determine close possible reasons. The multi-voting session allowed us to narrow down some of the reasons that might have led to a decline in revenue. Some of the key ideas that were narrowed down to included changes in seasons decrease in retention rate, increase in subscription amount and last but not least failure of the billing systems. The session was successful as some the solution we came up with were implemented and led an increasing the revenue.

I prefer to use brainstorm and multi-voting in my final papers in two ways. First and foremost, I will carry out a discussion group with my classmates who will be doing the same topic that I'm doing. Brainstorm will assist in generating ideas on the subject matter on the objective of the study. We can then review some of the past researched work based on the study. We can then narrow down on some of the goals that were met by past researchers who did a study in the field we chose by use of multi-voting. Another way that I prefer to use the brainstorm session is through a focus group that I plan to carry out to get more insight from primary data concerning the topic I have chosen to do.

In conclusion, we can note that the brainstorm is a potent analysis tool but must be applied efficiently to bring results. Brainstorm cannot only be used in finding the cause of a problem but also in generating ideas concerning a new product or strategy. It is good to note that any moderator who does not follow the brainstorm session ground rules can end up having opinions which are very biased or screwed towards the most vocal individuals. The moderators of any brainstorm and the multi-voting session should note that the outcome of their work will entirely depend on how the meetings were conducted. It is, therefore, the moderator’s responsibility to ensure that the brainstorm and the multi-voting meeting is carried out successfully.
