I am from Memphis Tn where a lot of Young African American males don’t make it out of. With the crime rates so high because of the gang infested neighborhoods all we knew was playing sports will increase the chances of getting Mom that big house she wanted. Throughout this process of paying sports I was lucky to have both of parents support but it was more so my mom. My dad was always there but never really made it to the games because of work which took me sometime to understand. As I watch my peers fathers take them to the games every Saturday morning really made me feel down. Just that manly support from a father helps the athlete out a lot because of the expectations of a father for his son. With the lack of support system from my pops emotionally in sport I became angry and felt that I had to hurt somebody every game. In the youth league when I started playing for the Grandview Raiders the coaches feel in love with my aggression and ability to get to the ball. At the age of five years old I had to choose between playing Football or do Karate due to the lack of funds to play two different sports. As a 5 year old young Black kid I can remember going to Karate classes with a bunch of kids who I felt like was in a higher social class then me. The reason for that is because how kids and parents look at me and my brother every time we came to class. I can remember almost getting into a fight with this white little boy because my shoes wasn’t as new as his. See I came from a household where a lot of my things where hand me downs from my brothers and the goodwill. Many of them never experience that struggle of wearing to big of clothes and to small of pants around. While all this was going on I ended up quitting both football and Karate due to the funds to support me and my brother. Never got a chance to even find out which I would have liked the best. After being forced to sit out for 2 years I finally got another shot of playing ball but with totally new team The Millington Trojans. I got introduce to this team way before I was seven years old. Actually one of my oldest brothers played for them Under the leadership of Coach Dennis who had a wonderful impact on my life. Coach Dennis was hard military style type of coach which was very intimidating. He never cursed at the players due to his strong belief of being a Christian. The way he discipline his players was rough which made you at that age not want to mess up again. A lot of parents look at it like man I think coach is being to harsh on them kids. In reality it help us to learn to listen and not goof off while the coach is talking. He always said you have to gain great listing skills to be a good player on and off the field
