Assignment 3: Research Proposal/Design
Throughout this course you have reviewed a variety of profile methods and have read a number of scholarly works
that seek to answer a variety of questions about political leaders.
Your third and final assignment will be the development of a research proposal that is focused upon profiling a
current world leader. It is not required that your chosen leader be a head of government, they might be the head
of a political party, terrorist organization, paramilitary, and etc. They must be alive and currently active.
Your proposal should be 8-10 pages in length (not including title page and reference page) and must include the
following:
Introduction. Your introduction should identify your specific research question and should set the general context
for the study. Within your introduction you need to discuss the following:

Statement of the problem or general research question and context leading to a clear statement of the
specific research question.
Background and contextual material justifying why we should study this leader and the potential implications
(theoretical, methodological, and etc) this study will have.
Purpose statement
Literature Review. This section should include a review of the literature as it pertains to your specific research
question. The literature review focuses on discussing how other researchers have attempted to address a similar
question, or have used a profile method that will inform your research design. Within a research proposal, the
literature review section introduces your study and places it into a larger context that includes a discussion of why
it is important to study this leader using your proposed framework. This section should demonstrate the current
state of our accumulated knowledge as it relates to your specific research question. Within this section you should:
Summarize the general state of the literature (cumulative knowledge base) on the specific research question.
Short conclusion and transition to the theoretical framework section.
Theoretical Framework. The theoretical framework section develops the theories or models to be used in the study
and shows how you have developed testable research hypotheses. This section should pull from the body of
knowledge that demonstrates how personality matters when it comes to decision-making, and how personality can
be accessed from a distance. Your discussion should include:
Introduction discussing gaps in the literature, how this study will help fill some of those gaps, and
justification for theory or model to be used in the study.
Summary of the theory or model to be used in the study.
Statement of the hypothesis to be tested.
Research Design. Your research design ultimately describes how you will test your hypothesis and carry out your
analysis of your research question. Since you are assigned to profile a world leader, your research design must
include a discussion of the profile methods (analytic methods) you intend to use to carry out your study. You will
also need to discuss the types of data you will need (something largely dictated by your chosen profile methods),
and how you will operationalize and collect data. Within this section you should also discuss any potential
weaknesses, biases, or limitations you foresee and your plan to mitigate these issues.
Reference List. As with all academic work, you should reference the works that you have cited (direct quotes or
paraphrases) in the text using the Turabian/Chicago parenthetical citation method.
How many sources should I review?
This is a common question asked by students. Essentially the key to an excellent research paper is the research
that helps back up its arguments. While this might be an unsatisfactory answer for those in need of a clear "magic
number" a few additional observations can be made. Students writing a course paper 15-20 pages in length should
expect to cite 15-30 peer-reviewed sources within their papers, though in order to get to this point they should
expect to read 25-50 peer-reviewed sources. For this assignment your literature review should reference

10-15 or more scholarly sources.
Format: Your literature review should include a title page, body, and reference page. Your paper should have 1-
inch borders on all four sides, use times new roman-12 point font, be double spaced, and not have an extra space
in between paragraphs. (You may need to turn this off in MS word by going to paragraph and clicking "Don't add
space between paragraphs of the same style). Since this is an INTL course you need to use the Turabian
parenthetical citation style with a references page.
The research design must be submitted as a Word Document Attachment in the Assignments section of the
classroom by Sunday, 11:55pm EST at the end of week 8.
As you proof read your assignment I encourage you to work with Belcher, Wendy Laura. 2009. "Editing Your Sentences" In
Writing Your Journal Article in 12 Weeks: A Guide to Academic Publishing Success. Sage. This resource has a nice step by
step process for enhancing your writing.
