PSY230 HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT #3:
ANOVAS
YOU MUST TURN IN 2 FILES TO CANVAS:
➢ The word document linked below, with your name on the front page and you answers typed in under each question in a
DIFFERENT COLOR FONT!
➢ Your SPSS output file titled with your last name and HW1Output, (example: Rhoads_HW1Output)
PROBLEM 1
There is some research indicating that college students who use Facebook while studying tend to
have lower grades than non-users (Kirschner & Karipinski, 2010). A study surveys students to
determine the amount of Facebook use during the time they are studying or doing homework. Based
on the amount of time spent on Facebook, students are classified into three groups and their grade
point averages (GPAs) are recorded. Here are the data:
Facebook use and GPA data among college students
Non-user Rarely Use Regularly Use
3.70 3.51 3.02
3.45 3.42 2.84
2.98 3.81 3.42
3.94 3.15 3.10
3.82 3.64 2.74
3.68 3.20 3.22
3.90 2.95 2.58
4.00 3.55 3.07
3.75 3.92 3.31
3.88 3.45 2.80
1. Use an ANOVA with α=.05 to determine whether there are significant mean differences among
the three groups.
2. Compute R² to measure the size of the effect (see page 346 or page 372 of the textbook).
3. Write a paragraph demonstrating how the result from the hypothesis test and the measure of the
effect size would appear in a research report (see page 350 of the textbook). Include the
appropriate descriptive statistics. Also include a few sentences on how these results can apply to
the real world.
PROBLEM 2
Several studies have supported the conclusion that health care providers who work late evening
shifts do not perform as well as providers who work shifts during day time hours. As a hospital
administrator, you have been charged with the task of determining if time of shift has an impact of
the quality of work of nurses at your hospital. You have collected reports on the quality of work for
nurses during the three shifts at your hospital: morning, afternoon and evening shifts.

1. Use an ANOVA with α=.05 to determine whether there are significant mean differences

2. Compute R² to measure the size of the effect (see page 346 or page 372 of the textbook).
3. Write a paragraph demonstrating how the result from the hypothesis test and the measure of
the effect size would appear in a research report (see page 350 of the textbook). Include the
appropriate descriptive statistics. Also include a few sentences on how these results can
apply to the real world. Further, if there is a significant main effect, what are some things you
could do as the hospital administrator to help this shift work problem?
