Research essay question – Language & Identity

In the works “Aria: A Memoir of a Bilingual Childhood” by Richard Rodriguez and “How to Tame a Wild Tongue” by Gloria Anzaldúa, the writers share their experiences of code-switching between languages in their private and public lives. From their accounts, what is a major consequence of code-switching, and how does doing so impact their private and public relations? Further, considering the consequence and its impact resulting from their experiences, incorporate your research the essays, “Ovuh Dyuh,” by Joanne Kilgour Dowdy, “Mother Tongue,” by Amy Tan, and other writers, scholars, theorists, and critics to explore the benefits and/or drawbacks that code-switching presents to an individual.

Note: Be sure to support your argument with specific examples from all texts (primary and secondary works). You may also draw from all texts, class discussions, journals, posts, and presentations to support your discussion.

Requirements for this paper include:

· 4-5 fully typed pages

· MLA format (12-point font, Times New Roman, double-spaced, one-inch margins all around and Works Cited pg.)

· Take a position/clear thesis

· Use quotes / support your argument rather than merely summarize with appropriate citation.
