Purpose: Dialects have always been a phenomenon that frustrates and excites the mind. Cultures have sought to ban and eliminate them. Others have embraced them. One thing is certain, dialects reveal much about a people group. This assignment will give you an opportunity to explore and consider the knowledge and power of dialects.

2. Dialects in the USA are primarily identified by lexicon and phonology. List 5 major dialects in the USA and describe how they are perceived by your culture.

3. Dialects differ in three main facets: phonology, lexicon, and syntax. In a paragraph, explain which of these is more acceptable to another dialect. Which is least acceptable?

Presentation: You have been given an opportunity to teach your colleagues about dialects. You are tasked with sharing your knowledge and the power of dialects with them. To assist you in sharing this information, create a presentation (PPT, PPTX, ODP, PDF) that highlights and explains dialects to them; as well as provides ideas to assist teachers in how to take advantage or cope with dialects.

Your presentation must include: an introductory slide (like a title page), an organized format (use transitions, themes, headings for unity/fluidity), and an aesthetic that keeps audience interest (some kind of hook, a theme, visuals – maybe an audio?). Slides should not have too many words on them – pretend this is a slideshow that an audience will see (so it cannot be crammed with too much info nor colors that hurt the eyes or that are difficult to see). Any cited material must be properly formatted and be in current APA, MLA, or Turabian style (whichever corresponds with your degree program). Citations are expected on some of the slides. The minimum number of outside sources is three (3). Ensure that cited articles come from peer-reviewed journals (quotes from the textbooks are in addition to the three outside sources). Dictionaries are not considered peer-reviewed, academic sources (cite them if you wish to, but they do not contribute to the minimum). Use the Jerry Falwell Library and other online journals to search for articles. Refer to the rubric for grading specifics.
