Lab Reporting

For all the labs, you will be asked to write a laboratory report, unless otherwise specified. Below are few

general guidelines:

 The lab report should be written in a professional manner, and in such a way that anyone who

reads it to be able to follow step-by-step the procedure, and to duplicate the results.

 The lab report should be simple, clearly written, and well organized.

 The lab report should contain accurate results, with the proper units.

 The lab report should be free of spelling and grammatical errors.

 The due date is one week after the experiment, unless specified otherwise.

 The lab report should have the following format:

 Title Page

The title page must be brief, explicit, and should contain the title of the experiment, the date of the

experiment, your name, and the names of your laboratory partners (in the case of assigned labs’

groups)

 Table of Contents (facultative)

 Objective (Purpose)

This section should contain a clear and concise statement, explaining the purpose of the experiment.

This is an important section of the lab report, since the content of the report must always relate to the

stated purpose. This section sets the tone of the whole lab report. The object should be written in the

form of a few sentences, usually written at past tense.

 Theory and Calculations

This section should describe the analytical development of all the important equations and calculations

pertinent to the experiment. Do not forget to write each property with its proper unit.

 Procedure

This section should contain a schematic drawing of the experimental setup and / or equipment, and

should detail the function of each part. Outline the steps performed during the experiment in such a

way that a reader may easily duplicate your results.

 Results and Discussion

The results section should contain an analysis of all the data (given and / or collected), data presented in

the form of tables, graphs, etc. Include units, scales and legends on your graphs and make sure that

different graph lines can be differentiated from one another. Also include details of your interpretation

of the numerical results and graphs.

 Conclusions

Summarize your work; no new results or new interpretations (other than already included above) should

be entered here. In a separate paragraph you can make suggestions on how the experiment may be

improved.

 References

List all the references used in your report.

An alternative lab report format may contain:

 Title Page

 Introduction (a shortened versions of Object, Theory, and Procedure).

 Results and discussion.

 Conclusion.

 References.
