General Criteria:

• Aim to spend anywhere from 6-12 hours on this (depending on your efficiency). It’s a good idea to plan small blocks of time to put towards this over the next couple of weeks.

• The goal is to explore a topic of interest and then convey what you have learned. • You can also make “teaching” a focus of the project (lesson plan, instructional video,

narrated slide show etc.) • All projects must have a written introduction explaining what the project is about (and

possibly why you chose it, what is interesting about it, why you chose that format etc.) • All projects must have a Reference list (you may use any well-known reference system

but note down which one you are using eg. APA etc. and be consistent in its use). • The reports should have a minimum of 3 references and 5 or more is preferred

especially if they are all secondary references. Primary references are great but likely difficult to use in a project like this so it is OK to only use secondary sources.

• Most Earth Science topics are very visual, so good graphics or your own diagrams /drawings /illustrations /graphs etc. are likely to be important in a good report.

Essay/Written Report Specific Criteria

• The general structure should include an introduction, the body or “discussion” portion of the text, conclusions or summary, references and graphics (images, diagrams, tables, graphs etc.). The main body of the text may be broken into further sections if it makes sense based on the topic.

• Length of report should be somewhere between 1000 and 4000 words (~3-8 pages of text). This is a big range because depending on the topic and your writing, you can get across a lot of information in ~1000 words or with more background or a topic requiring a broader context, you may need more space to get what you need across. A short essay can be an excellent one so longer is not better.
