Evolution and Ecology – BIO 2424 – Spring 2021

Purpose:

This week’s laboratory we will look at numerous published papers in public health, ecology and evolution. These papers have been selected to provide a glimpse of the diversity of topics evolutionary ecologist’s find useful and timely. The scientific literature is the basis for knowing what we know about the natural world (epistemology).

Knowledge:

The process of reading the scientific literature helps us realize what we think we know and what we don’t know.

Students will read one of the articles that have been assigned and together with classmates will review the paper’s contents to the class. A grading rubric will be provided to help to assess students’ success in reviewing the assigned article. Participation is vital.

Skills:

Time is of the essence so that students will be given approximately one hour in class to review the article’s content and another 30 minutes (or less) to organize the presentation by the group. Students are assigned to one of the many selected articles and will receive a grade based on their participation in presenting that article to the class with the help of their collaborators.

Task:

Read the article systematically. Make notes about the article to engage the other students reading the same article in presenting an overview of the article to the class.
