Lab briefing

General information  MyAberdeen will be regularly used.

 Attendance at lecture is compulsory.

 Continuous Assessment is a laboratory experiment.

 Each student will attend one 4h session during weeks 30-33.  Tuesdays 9-1pm  Thursdays 9-1pm

 See table under Course Timetable on MyAberdeen for your lab session allocation.

Lab briefingLab report is due at NOON one week after lab session

group lab session report submission deadline

G1 TUES. 19 FEB. TUES. 26 FEB. G2 THURS. 21 FEB. THURS. 28 FEB. G3 TUES. 26 FEB. TUES. 5 MAR. G4 THURS. 28 FEB. THURS. 7 MAR. G5 TUES. 5 MAR. TUES. 12 MAR.

Every student submits: • Hard copy to submission box outside UG Engineering office. • Electronic copy to TurnitIn via MyAberdeen course page. Link will become visible

at the end of your respective lab sessions. • This is NOT a group submission – your report must contain only your own writing.

Lab briefingWhat you will do on the day (see instruction sheet for details)

1. You will be split into groups of two or three.

2. Each group will be given: • a 150mm x 150 mm Hele-Shaw cell packed with glass spheres at Soi = 100% • pore volume of the packed bed. • an aqueous polymer solution of known C.

3. You will use a syringe pump to inject 1.5 pore volumes of your polymer solution from one corner of the cell.

4. Every 10-15 min.: • measure vol. of oil and water produced using a measuring cylinder. • trace the outline of the polymer front on an acetate sheet. • take a photo.

Lab briefingWhat you will do on the day (see instruction sheet for details)

5. While idle: • Tabulate oil recovery measurements in Excel. • Place acetate over graph paper and calculate the areal sweep. Tabulate in

Excel.

6. Before you leave the session one member from each group must email me, cc: other members of the group:

• table of cumulative oil recovery vs dimensionless time • a photocopy of the acetate with the outlines of the polymer front at selected

times. • a table of swept area vs dimensionless time

Lab briefing

Plagiarism cover sheet for ‘continuously assessed individual work’.

Title, date of lab session, and your name at the top of first page.

Statement of the objectives of the exercise.

Pre-lab. Your answers to task 2 in the pre-lab exercise.

Methods

Results • Selected photos for the C your group considered. • For the three C from your lab session:

• Outlines of the polymer front at the selected times. • Plot of cumulative oil recovery as a function of time. • Plot of areal sweep efficiency as a function of time.

Outline of lab report (see instruction sheet for details). Max. 12 pages.

Lab briefing

Risk assessment • Test fluids are not toxic on contact under anticipated conditions:

• aqueous xanthan solution with food dye. • sunflower oil or vegetable oil.

• Hazard 1: Your flow system will be at pressure once injection starts.  Fittings, parts, and ends of tubing may become loose and • parts themselves may be propelled into eye. • test fluids may be propelled into eye.

PPE • Wear safety glasses until the last experiment is complete and all setups have been dismantled. • Wear lab coat at all times in FN012. • Wear nitrile lab gloves during the experiment. • Wear closed-toe shoes.

Lab briefing

Risk assessment cont'd • Hazard 2: Substantial volume of liquids.

• leaked and spilled liquids are trip hazards. • electrocution. • disrupt / contaminate other experimental setups in the vicinity.

• Hazard 3: Glass beads are rigid and small (2mm in diameter). If they spill during an experiment or during the dismantling of the cell and cleaning post-experiment: • can bounce and enter eyes. • trip hazard. • disrupt / contaminate other experimental setups in the vicinity.  Wear safety glasses until the last experiment is complete and all setups have

been dismantled.  If glass beads are spilled accidentally during the experiment, carefully remove

them and hand them to the demonstrators.
