EET 2010 Lab Exercise #8 Electronics Principles

JFET Characteristic Curves

Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to see how a JFET operates by gathering data and plotting its

characteristic curves.

Equipment

1. DC Power Supply

2. Multimeter

Materials

1. 2N5459 JFET Transistor

2. 10 k Resistor

3. 100  Resistor

Procedure

1. Using the multimeter, measure the resistances of each resistor.

RG = RD =

2. On a breadboard, construct the dc circuit shown in Figure 8-1

3. Measure ID for each of the values of VD and VG in the table below. Be sure to record

each measured value in its entirety. Be as accurate as the measuring instrument being

used.

Data Analysis:

1. Using the data from Table 8-1 above, create a similarly formatted table, Table 8-2, that

includes a calculated value of VDS for each measured value of ID (use measured

resistances values)

2. From Table 8-2, use EXCEL, Calc, Matlab or your favorite graphing software (not

AutoCAD) to plot the family of characteristic curves (drain curves).

Submittal:

a. Circuit – do not use the instructor’s drawing

b. Sample Calculations: VDS (values calculated in the table)

c. Tables (2)

d. Plots of the family of characteristic curves

Hint: For a successful submittal, make sure your submittal components are presented in the

above order. This makes organized and logical sense for an explanation of data. Be sure

headings are stated (for example: DATA) and all components of the DATA section (for example:

TABLE 8-1 or Sample Calculations) are labeled.

1. Title Page 2. Objective – be original and thorough 3. Procedure – this may be completed in steps

5. DISCUSSION – Be sure to comment on the behavior of the transistor. 6. CONCLUSION

4. DATA sec'on including:
