Part 3 (17 points)

Task 6: Given the dataset options available to you, determine the two warmest years for each

station on record. Be sure to include which data set you observed and what you observed in

your results.

1. Download the temperature data for each station with the link attached below;

2. Sort the annual temperatures (under “ metANN ”) from highest to lowest;

a. Pedro Canga:

https://data.giss.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/gistemp/stdata_show_v4.cgi?id=PEM00084370

&dt=1&ds=14

b. Hiva Oa:

https://data.giss.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/gistemp/stdata_show_v4.cgi?id=FP000091925&

dt=1&ds=14

3. Write down the hottest years for both stations in the table below;

Table 6: ( 4 points)

Warmest Year (Temperature °C)

Task 7 : Next, go to https://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/ . Click on the " Global Maps "

dataset to observe the regional surface temperature distribution for the warmest years you found

above. Before you make each map, be sure that you have selected all of the appropriate

parameters.

1. Your Map Type should be " anomalies ”.

2. Mean Period can be " NH Fall (Sep-Nov) " for the warmest year in Pedro Canga ;

then change your mean period to “ NH Spring (Dec-Feb) ” for the warmest year in

Hiva Oa ; compare the two maps;

3. Time Interval should be the warmest year from Task 6.

4. For Base Period, it should be the time range of your data, which is “ Begin 1988 -

End 2018 ”.

5. Click “ Make Map ” to make your map. NOTE: If oceans are set to "none," you

will not be able to see data for the ocean.

1. What do the Zonal Mean vs. Latitude graphs under each map look like? (2 points)

a. Show your Zonal Mean Charts (2 points)

2. Based on the observed maps and graphs for the two chosen years, what areas exhibit the

most warming and cooling? (2 points)

a. Show your global maps (2 points)

3. Can you explain the reason for features observed (or not observed) in the tropical Pacific

(lat: -45 to 45)? (1 point)

4. What anthropogenic and natural factors could influence the amount of warming over the

coming century? (2 points)
