Learning Outcomes for Quantitative Literacy:

· Understand quantitative models that describe real world phenomena and recognize limitations of those models;

· Understand the various sources of uncertainty and error in empirical data;

Follow the directions, answer the questions within the exercise, and complete the assignment.

1. Draw a Map (by hand) of your home town (with title). If you have headphones please listen to music as your draw your map.

Take a picture of your map and submit it with the rest of assignment in Canvas. You can insert the photo in this document quite easily.

2. Exchange Mental Maps With a Friend (preferably someone from a different hometown) This doesn’t have to be someone from class – but the other person should draw a map as well and participate in this exercise.

a) After reading your partner’s map what can you say about them?

(Write at least 6 sentences. Describe who you think they are based on what you see on the map.)

Xiaoyu draws a very detailed map of Wenzhou. She included the biggest four district of the city, divided it by drew the national highway. And she draws the river and islands, which could easily know that Wenzhou is a coastal city. But the disadvantage of the map is she did not label the scale of the map on the side.

3. Interview your partner and answer the following questions:

a) What is your partner’s name and home town?

My partner’s name is Xiaoyu Xu comes from Wenzhou.

b) Describe the scale of the map? Large or small? Identify one of the objects on the map

The scale of the map is small. There is a Wenzhou Island on the northeastern part of Wenzhou.

c) What is labeled on the map?

The map labeled the districts, national highway, river and islands.

d) Ask about three features on the map. Why did your partner select them? Why are they important?

The first one I want to ask is why she select to include the Ouhai Ave, but not the others. Second one is Oujiang River. Third one is Hongdian Residential District.

e) Were you right about your partner? Was your analysis similar to your partner’s explanation of the map?

My analysis of the map is similar to Xiaoyu’s explanation.

f) What songs/kinds of music did your partner listen to? How do you think it affected the way they made the map?

My partner did not listen to any music while making the map, because she wants to be focus on making the map.

4. Include a picture of your partner’s map
