Electron Configuration & Periodic Trends Lab

The lab for this week is a dry lab. Please use your textbook and CANVAS lecture video.

Here are some important details so that you can have the pre–lab ready to go:

Experimental Title: Electron Configuration & Periodic Trends Lab

Date started: Date of Lab

Unknown #: N/A

Balanced Reactions: *Leave enough space for the following areas* You will have a total of three reactions for each group. (same or different reactants)

Reaction(s) of alkali metals:

Reaction(s) of alkaline Earth metals:

Reaction(s) of Group IIIA elements:

Reaction(s) of Group IVA elements:

Reaction(s) of the pnictogens:

Reaction(s) of the chalcogens:

Reaction(s) of the halogens:

Reaction(s) of the noble gases:

Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to use the periodic chart to derive the following information about the elements: 1) electron configurations, 2) orbital diagrams, 3) magnetic properties, 4) atomic radii, 5) ionization energies, 6) electron affinities, and 7) types of oxide formation (acidic, basic or amphoteric). (example provided)

This analysis will be performed on the following elements: Be, Zn, P, Kr, Y, Br, Cr, Cu, Hg, Al, C, Li, F, Rb, Ba, I, Sb, He.

Table of Chemical and Physical Properties: N/A

Post lab:

Include all prelab sections

Include scanned copies of this instruction sheet after filling out the data tables

Discussion and conclusion: Not required

Please refer to the corresponding sections in the lecture video for explanations regarding 1) electron configurations, 2) orbital diagrams, 3) magnetic properties, 4) atomic radii, 5) ionization energies, 6) electron affinities, and 7) types of oxide formation (acidic, basic or amphoteric).

Common free app for scanning is “Camscanner”
