Part 2 Programming exercise

1. The University of California at Irvine has a Machine Learning repository. In this repository, there exists a dataset, which contains several sentences from Amazon, Yelp and IMDB comments. These sentences also are labeled as positive or negative according to the sentiment expressed in them.

2. The format of each line in this dataset (text file) is: a. source (amazon, yelp, or imdb) b. tab character (\t) c. sentence d. tab character (\t) e. label (0 means negative, 1 means positive)

3. You will create a program that will open this file to read its contents, filter these sentences, and write them to another text file.

4. Create a project named Sentences. 5. Download the dataset (labeled_sentences.txt) from Canvas, and add

it to the project folder. 6. Create a new package named sentences. 7. Also, download the java files from Canvas, and add them to the project

folder in the package folder sentences. a. LabeledSentence.java b. SentenceHandler.java c. SentenceTest.java

8. LabelSentence.java contains the structure to store a labeled sentence: source, sentence, and label. It also includes getters and setters for these instance variables.

9. SentenceHandler.java is an abstract class which provides the definition of the expected methods to handle a list of sentences:

a. Load the labeled sentences from a file and store them into an ArrayList

b. Filter the ArrayList and return the result as another ArrayList c. Store the resulting ArrayList to another text file.

10. SentenceTest.java gets the input filename, the output filename, the selected source, and the selected label from the array args.

11. Complete the constructor public LabeledSentence(String[] values).

a. This constructor receives a String array with three values (source, sentence, label)

b. Since the instance variable this.label is a boolean variable the parameter received as label has to be converted to boolean.

c. Store those values into their corresponding variables. 12. Create a subclass of SentenceHandler named DataHandler.

13. In DataHandler, complete the three abstract methods: loadFile, filter, saveFile.

14. In the method loadFile, a. Initialize the list by creating an ArrayList of

LabeledSentence objects. b. Open the input file for reading. c. Read each line and split the values by the tab character (\t). d. Create a new LabeledSentence object using the constructor,

which receives a String array. e. Add the LabeledSentence object to the ArrayList. f. Close the file.

15. In the method filter, a. Create an empty temporal ArrayList of LabeledSentence

objects. b. For each LabeledSentence in the list, which contains the

same source and label parameters, add that LabeledSentence to the temporal ArrayList.

c. Return the temporal ArrayList. 16. In the method saveFile,

a. Open the output file for writing. b. Store each LabeledSentence object from the parameter

externalList to the output file. c. Each line of the output file will contain

i. source ii. tab character (\t) iii. sentence iv. tab character (\t) v. label (0 means negative, 1 means positive). A conversion

from boolean to int is required. d. Close the file.

17. In the file SentenceTest, a. The following lines may raise an error:

i. dh.loadFile(inputFile); ii. ArrayList<LabeledSentence> filteredList = dh.filter(source,label);

iii. dh.saveFile(outputFile,filteredList);

b. Enclose those lines in a try-catch block. c. Catch the FileNotFoundException. d. In the catch block, print the message “The file could not be opened.

Please verify the file exists or you have the appropriate permissions in that folder.”.

18. Once the program is compiling correctly, try running configurations with the following arguments:

a. labeled_sentences.tsv amazon_negative.tsv amazon 0 i. This file should contain 500 sentences
