EE Lab Safety Policy and Measures

1. No food or beverages are permitted in the EE Labs. 2. Only students scheduled for a lab session are allowed in the EE Labs. 3. Locate the nearest exit and fire extinguisher. Never work alone in the EE Labs. 4. Do not adjust the metal shelf position. Do not move equipment. Use caution

when re-positioning equipment on the metal shelves to prevent equipments from

falling.

5. Turn off power before plugging, unplugging, or re-positioning equipments. 6. Use the correct lead/plug/probe for the equipments. Do not use alligator clips on

the equipments. Use caution to prevent metal leads from touching each other.

7. Do not pull on the power cord. Plug and unplug using the power cord plug. 8. Do not attempt to repair any equipment. Do not open the chassis of any

equipment. Report all equipment defects or safety issues to the lab technician.

9. Make certain that the power supply is off before connecting power leads to the breadboard or disconnecting power leads from the breadboard.

10. Turn off power to the breadboard before inserting or removing components. 11. Power supply voltages should be increased slowly while monitoring for high

current conditions.

12. Turn off power immediately, if any component becomes hot or begins smoking. 13. Do not exceed the voltage and/or power rating of electrical components. Be very

careful to observe the polarity of electrolytic capacitors, which can explode if

connected the wrong way.

14. Do not place your face directly over the breadboard when powering-up. Safety glasses are recommended for eye protection; regular glasses are acceptable.

15. Do not work with wet hands. 16. Avoid metal jewelry which may dangle or fall onto electrical circuits. Long hair

and loose clothing can cause hazards if tangled with circuits or equipments.

17. Do not lean against equipment or workbench. 18. When finished, turn off all equipment on your workbench, do not leave loose

metal parts or wires on your bench, and return all components back to the lab

monitor.

19. In the event of an electrical fire, do not use water (the lab fire extinguishers are specifically charged for electrical fires), vacate the lab and close the door, and

ring the fire alarm.

20. In the event of emergency, call 911.
