OBJECTIVE:
Given an unknown sample containing potassium chlorate and potassium chloride, be able to determine the percent composition of potassium chlorate in the mixture of KClO3
& KCl.

Pre-Lab
1. Complete the procedure you wrote in Lab 6.

1. Have your lab instructor sign your data and calculations sheet.
2. Your Lab Instructor will initial the Title Page of Your Lab to indicate that you have attended the lab, completed the required lab activities, cleaned your lab bench and all equipment used, and returned all lab equipment to its designated space. A Lab Report that is not initialed in the Checkout box may not be graded. It is at the discretion of your Lab Instructor.

Safety Concerns
If you use a procedure where you heat the mixture of KClO3 and KCl, please observe the following safety concerns.
Warm the test tube containing the mixture gently before heating strongly to prevent thermal shock and test tube breakage.
When heating the contents of a test tube, be sure the open end of the tube is not pointed at anyone in the lab.
Never leave a test tube that is being heated unattended.
Be careful not to touch a heated test tube with your hands;
use a clamp or test tube holder.
Tips for heating the mixture: To ensure uniform heating of the mixture and to promote fast and complete reaction, the chemicals in the test tube must be mixed thoroughly BEFORE heating starts. Tap the test tube bottom against your palm to mix the chemicals.
Once you have obtained instructor approval of your pre-lab, as indicated by your instructor’s signature, you may begin to gather your equipment and carry out your experiment. Be sure to perform at least
2 and trials of your experiment to obtain reproducible results.

This is the most important section of your report where you demonstrate that you understand the theory and results of your experiment. Your Instructor may give you specific questions to answer as part of your discussion. Your Instructor may require
you to submit your Results and Discussion in Canvas so that it can be checked by
Turnitin.

calculate the percent error
o if your percent error is large, explain why your results differ from accepted results
o list potential sources of error (both systematic and random error) in the experiment and how they would affect the results
o how might you improve the experiment in order to obtain results closer to the accepted result
o answer any specific questions that your instructor may assign
o discuss the significance of the experiment and whether your results agree
with current theory on the topic. Attempt to relate your lab experience with what you have learned in lecture.
o cite any references using APA format
o submit your discussion section to turnitin.com according to the directions
provided by your lab instructor
The entire report should be assembled in the order above and stapled in the upper left hand corner. All lab reports must be complete and legible and must be turned on the date due. If your lab report is not legible, your lab instructor may require you to rewrite it before it will be graded and it will be treated as a late lab report. If you fail to submit the lab report on time a 50% deduction will be taken; your lab instructor will not accept your report after 4 days past due.
