Introduction |
Include one to two paragraphs.
Content in this section to include information on the career and why you selected this particular career as your dream job. NOTE: DO NOT write in first-person tense. For example, you might start off with something like:
The landscape of public health careers is broad and changing. With the predicted retirement of approximately 42% of the public health workforce by 2020 (Sellers et al., 2015), there is an excellent opportunity for people who are interested in fields related to epidemiology. Similar to being a detective, some areas of epidemiology require a keen desire to identify and prevent infectious diseases, resulting in the anecdotal term, disease detectives. The roles of epidemiologists vary, dependent upon the needs of their organizations and communities (Sandman, 1991). There are many reasons a person might choose to pursue a career in epidemiology. For example, a person may have an interest in solving problems or may want to contribute to population health from a preventive perspective. Another reason might be related to a desire to work in global settings, to focus on the health of vulnerable populations, or to work in healthcare or government settings. A recent article published in the American Journal of Epidemiology describes epidemiology as a dynamic discipline that has evolved and will continue to evolve as new methodologies related to tracking disease and threats to health exist (Samet & Woodward, 2019). The following report includes information on a particular area of epidemiology known as infectious disease prevention with content related to areas such as job description, requirements, compensation, employment outlook, and resources for employment on national and state levels.
