Identifying management in an organization may be di�cult because policies, procedures, goals, values, and the mission can be in�uenced by line sta� as well as top administrators. Many theoretical attempts have been made to iden‐ tify who management is and the responsibilities of management in an organization. In this text, man‐ agement is viewed as e�cient and e�ective in meet‐ ing organizational goals while using the least amount of resources possible. Organizations di�er greatly in size, structure, val‐ ues, goals, and mission. Organizations can be formal or informal, centralized or decentralized. They may have de�ned chains of command and vertical com‐ munication or loosely identi�ed chains of com‐ mand and horizontal communication. The overall purpose of any organization is to achieve agreed-on goals and objectives. Organizations have a vision of how work should be accomplished by the line sta�. They identify a mis‐ sion statement so that those outside of the organi‐ zation are aware of their purpose. Organizations create value structures that depend on the people working in the organization and the culture of the organization. Values are considered the priorities of the organization.
