Key Points •Cultural competence is an evolving process of acquiring the

ability to provide effective nursing care to patients despite the many different ethnicities and cultures encountered.

•Cultural competence requires cultural awareness, cultural knowledge, cultural sensitivity, cultural skill, cultural humility, and cultural proficiency.

•Cultural competence leads to culturally congruent care that supports, empowers, and helps the patient with actions or decisions that are congruent with the patient’s cultural beliefs, ultimately promoting his or her health and well-being.

•A strategy to address health care disparities and improve patient outcomes regardless of ethnicity would be providing culturally congruent nursing care.

•To provide culturally congruent patient care, the nurse must strike a balance between all three cultures: the nurse’s own culture, the patient’s culture, and the culture of the health care institution.
