  • Poorly acted movies of the 70s starring the musicians foreshadows the rise of the music video

Led Zeppelin

  • Heavier, blues influenced sound
  • Jimmy Page (guitar), John Bonham (drums) are rock royalty on respective instruments
  • Hits- Stairway to Heaven, Immigrant Song

Heavy Metal

  • British groups helped pioneer darker, heavier style
  • Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth
  • Loud guitars using “distortion” effects with amplifiers
  • Sub-genres- Speed, Black, Death, Thrash, and Hair metal

  • Rejection of hair metal

90s Grunge Hits

  • Nirvana- Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come as You Are
  • Pearl Jam- Evenflow, Jeremy
  • Soundgarden- Blackhole Sun, My Wave, Spoonman
  • Alice in Chains- Man in the Box, Rooster

Nu metal-Rap Metal

  • Late 90s, early 2000s
  • Mixed heavy rock/metal sounds with hip hop influences
  • Rage Against the Machine, Korn, Deftones, Limp Bizkit
  • Many bands altered song formats
  • Removed typical guitar solo

Nu metal- Rap Metal Examples

  • Korn- Blind, Did My Time
  • Rage Against the Machine- Bulls on Parade
  • Some groups, like Korn did variations on typical forms, removing guitar solos. RATM kept solos, experimenting with distortion effects

Rock in the New Millenium

  • Re-incorporation of earlier pop styles
  • Similar sounds to pop rock from the 1980s
  • Other influences such as folk music of the 60s and 70s
