Case Study: Kelly Robinson
Benchmark A
Kelly completed all of the required curriculum training in a combination of individual and group settings. During the Job Search training, Kelly was able to research quite a few businesses, job openings and areas he was interested in working at. Also, during this time his JPS, Steven used his network of employers and connections to get several leads on employers and visited quite a few of the businesses that Kelly had expressed interest in. He was able to complete a job analysis on 3 employers that Kelly expressed a desire to investigate for employment. Kelly applied to all 3 but was most interested in the job at Pep Boys, the “crew” he would work with would be 5 people, where the other places had crews larger than 10 people. Kelly completed the application at Pep Boys and had an interview with the manager that Steven had previously connected with. Pep Boys hired him; his first day of employment was July. 2nd, 2019. Steven worked with Kelly to develop a script to use to discuss accommodations with the manager. He was able to request his necessary accommodations. Steven spent the first three hours of Kelly's shift with him to provide support.
His job title is a General Service Technician, with his pay starting at $8.34 an hour. Kelly’s first 5 days of employment were over 4th of July holiday; he did work July 4th for 5 hours in the later afternoon to help the store stay stocked for the holiday sale. He helped stock shelves and was paid time and half for working on this holiday. The other 4 days were spent attending orientation/on-boarding, taking the required safety trainings, learning the specific areas of the garage area, having one-on-one training with a senior technician. By the end of the week, Kelly was starting to earn his “internal certifications” on the equipment he would be required to use. This training will continue until he is certified on all equipment.
Steven is ready to bill for Benchmark A and has prepared the following items for submission:
VR1845B VR1846 VR1850 Kelly’s Resume (if required by VR staff)
A copy Kelly’s Elevator Speech Video of the mock interviews (if required by VR staff) An Invoice
Steven stayed in contact by phone with Kelly, requiring Kelly to call him on day 2 and day 4 after his shift to provide Steven with the details of how the first days were going. Steven met with Kelly on 3rd day of work to help train how to stock shelves and the day after his 5th shift, to have him sign the required forms.

Benchmark B
Kelly has worked for 45 days. Steven has stayed in contact with him and made it a point to visit the store at least once every other week on Tuesdays after Benchmark A was achieved (the 1st visit after Benchmark A was 9 July) and on the 46th day to complete the required paperwork.
Steven makes it a point to speak with Leon weekly either in person or by phone to check-in with Kelly’s progress. Kelly is happy and states he likes his job. Kelly’s accommodations are still in place and there have not been any changes to them. Leon expressed his pleasure at what a hard worker he is. His training has progressed as planned. He has worked during one of the busier times of the year in a retail/auto motive center.
He was asked to help re-stock items in the retail side a few times because of the holiday sales. As long as he was provided a “plan-o-gram” (a diagram that shows how and where specific retail products should be placed on retail shelves or displays in order to increase customer purchases) he did not have any trouble. Leon provided Kelly notice of this change and coordinated with Steven, so Steven has been able to assist with this “change”. His job description has remained the same.
One issue that has come up is Kelly is hesitant to ask for help on larger jobs and Leon has to inquire directly with him to see if he needs assistance. Dion let Steven know about this and together they determined a daily “check-in” was needed. Kelly is required to initiate the “check-in” with Leon at least once during his shift. Leon wants to ensure Kelly is able to complete his tasks as assigned. So far, it has been working well. Kelly “checks-in” with Leon and they discuss the tasks for the day.
During visits by the JPS, he noticed Kelly is taking his breaks with co-workers and being included in lunches and typical work-place conversations. He attended the summer bar-b-que with two of his co-workers. He received a gift card to a local grocery store from the employer as a “thank you” for working hard during the busy sale season.
Kelly has not missed a shift, been tardy or been written up for anything. He has earned his required certifications and wants to finish his ASE course to earn that certification.
Steven is ready to bill for Benchmark B.
